Been in the news today that there are calls for age of consent to be lowered to 15, also a barrister has said it should be 13. What's people's views on this? |

Jesus, can we at least wait until puberty before we start letting them have sex. Also, let the poor buggers have some stab at being kids.
Some kids will be OK starting at that age, some kids wouldn't. 16 is a good level to set it at. |

anecdotal evidence says that some kids start having sex around the age of 13 or 14 and from having a girl and boy of our own we know this to be true for their friends at least. I think the age of consent should be left where it is and all of us, parents, teachers and health education workers should be giving kids all the information they need to make informed decisions about what they do with their bodies. We should also be instilling self esteem into girls so they don't feel the need to have sex to for any other reasons than their own and into boys for the same reason. Y |

There are much more important issues to debate and worry about, evolution is making some people mature earlier than others..thats a fact. no one age suits everyone.
Lets worry about really important issues, like.
Who will win strictly, and the x factor? |

Omg why would they think of doing this theres so much wrong in this in my view even at 15 they are still kids grown up yes but still in the eyes of the law so now if they do this they will be saying a 15 kid can have sex with a grown man or woman surely this cant be a good thing how can a parent protect a child if this comes into force took at what has been going on in the news in the past now they will be making it legal |

A parent can protect a child by providing a good stable family, with a loving mother and father, good education and a good balanced relationship with their child. |

They will never raise it.. but I do think that as they now stay in education till 18 that age of consent should be similar..
I am happy that my girls at home so far haven't seen the need. They both want to meet the right guy first.. and see it as a gift to give someone. |

I'd say 18 only because at moment you can legally have sex and have a baby but can't buy beer or a wank mag till your 18 so maybe move it to 18 so then they are legally adults not kids |

raising the age of consent will not stop young adults having sex with each other it never has and it never will. Raising it to 18 will allow us to prosecute people of over that age who are found to be having sex with people of under that age, is that what we want to do? Would you be happy to see a 20 year old man or woman with a criminal record becuse they had sex with a 17 year old? I think 16 is about right it allows us to penalise men and women who groom vulnerable youngsters for sex but as I said before equip our youngsters, make sex less of a shameful subject and give them the tools to make decisions about sex themselves rather than relying on a law to do it for them. |

I don't believe that it should be lowered at all. There are enough unplanned pregnancies these days without lowering so that kids that believe it won't happen to them experient with sex.
Just the thought of a 13 year old getting pregnant & having a baby, it would be kids having kids & the parnets of those kids then helping to raise the grandkids.
Let kids be kids, go to school & experience life before we give them the green light to go off having sex. xx |

Is it teh legal age of consent that's giving them the green light? If so why aren't more youngsters waiting until 16? |

Does the age matter?
Most kids dont worry about the age - they just want to, and different kids at different ages.
However, lowering it to 13 ... lunacy... thats saying to kids 'go do it'. They should leave it at 16, but more importantly when the kid is mature enough to decide they want to.
Dropping it to 13 would lead to LOTS of old men shagging young girls.
Barrister should be fired... or maybe he is one of those old men who want to play with a 13yr old |

Kids will do what they are told not too! Personally i think 16 is a fair age. I would like to see 2 things happen though.
1. Prosecution of anyone knowingly having sex with an under age person (when they know the person is under age, sometimes it's hard to tell nowadays).
2. More parents realising their under 16's are going to have sex and making sure the child knows they can approach them for contraceptive support.
You can shoot me down now but i have a 14 & 16 yr old daughter and both know if they want to start having sex to come to me and we'll be off down the doctors for contraception and not judgement.

Exactly this. It would be a peadophiles paradise. And for those in the legal profession who are pushing for it, well it would seem they have a vested interest.
Nobody in their right mind would want to engage in sexual activity with a 13 or 14 year old girl. But then again paedophiles aren't in their right mind are they.
Leave it at 16. |

A lot of countries have to close age rule - which means age of consent is say 16 but if having sex with someone within 5 years of that age - can be 14/15 ( thus other person max 20) |

Sorry, but a 14 year old with a 19 year old is still wrong in my eyes and that's in the 5 year rule. Secondly its possible for a 26 year old to like a 19 year old and that's 7 years. I'd say as soon as you have left school that's the right age to do it. |

Age is a strange thing as if a 16 year old went with a 14 year old. Are they a peado? No they aren't. If a bloke in his 60s was trying it on with a 16 year old girl. Yes its legal, but I would still class them in the same sense as a peado. |

I'm happy for it to stay at 16, although I had friends at school that were active younger, and I'm sure that still goes on now, but we certainly don't want to encourage it.
I started seeing my ex husband when I was 15, we ended up having a 22 year relationship and 3 kids, he is 4 years older than me, we did pretty well so I guess some kids mature quicker than others, but you need an age for those who are slower to mature. |

I'll admit that I'm unsure about this.
My heart says leave it as it is (but make contraception available to those who need it regardless of age).
However, my head asks whether the teenage pregnancy rate is related to the age of consent. The Wikipedia article "Teenage pregnancy and sexual health in the United Kingdom" suggests we're pretty shit compared to other OECD countries with the exception of the US. Saying that, however, the rate has been falling over recent years without the age of consent changing, so maybe it's more about education than legislation. |

"By the way, I believe this guy we're all talking about has only said there should be a debate about lowering the age... I agree with that. Having a debate doesn't mean it's a fait accompli."
I'm not convinced he's serious about the 15 bit.
Had he issued a report saying there should be more sex education for teenagers, particularly regarding contraception and the spread of chlamydia, he wouldn't have gotten a mention on the news or in the press.
A wee bit of controversy goes a long way in media coverage.
Me? I'd keep the age at 16. |

It looks like its ok in other countries , would 15 for the age of consent reduce child pregnacy. In other countries its lower yet we are the under 16 pregnacy capitol of europe . Maybe 15 would be ok if the partner was of similar age , a 50 year old should not be thinking about sex with a 15 year old be it male or female . And remember we are talking both sexes here not just females . Better education for unwanted pregnancy would help , and a goveremnt that does care would be a starter |

Physically I was ready to have sex at a lot younger than 16 but was I mentally ? In my case no and that is what the issue is here.
The law protects youngsters who can become the victims of peer pressure and 16 is just about right.
Plus many are still unsure about their own sexuality, lowering the age further would be a bad move.

But the law isn't protecting youngsters it is only allowing prosecution if abusers are caught after the event. The age of consent is in my opinion about right at 16 but it will never act as protection only a possible deterrant (which is a good thing) it won't stop adults grooming young men and women of under 16 and havng sex with them but it does allow them to be criminalised which is good, it won't stop youngsters having sex with each other either that's where education and empowerment come in. Relying on a legislated age of consent to keep youngsters from being groomed or from having sex won't in my opinion work. |

But if there isn't a law about the age of consent, there isn't a law about the age of consent to break.
That law will only work if it's rigorously applied. There can be no grey areas.
The CPS deciding that a 15yo girl and a 14yo boy who are having sex won't be prosecuted (for whatever reason) sends out a mixed message at best and the wrong message at worst. |

Ruby x"
They already can under the gillick/fraser competency ruling so thats a poor argument to use. Kids will always have underage sex. In my opionion, lowering the legal age will only encourage kids to start younger. |

Yes we need to be clear on what is legal and what isn't, I support a legal age of consent but it will never stop underage people from having sex that is what we need to deal with along with the adults who have sex with underage people. I think changing the age of consent is focusing on the wrong aspect of the problem. |
