I read that there is no cure for this and most people don't even know they have them.
So something to worry about or just wait till the symptoms go and carry on? |

dont know much about this, have no idea what the symptoms are but know that you are infectious whether showing them or not, your locl clinic should be able to give advice, dont be affraid to ask them they have seen it all before, and always get tested |

Basically it's the seeing strand of the cold sore virus and is highly contagious. The virus can be passed by all forms of physical contact in the same way as a cold sore.
That's the basics. If you think you have it, definitely visit your GU clinic and make sure all sexual partners are aware if you do have it. And I definitely wouldn't have any unprotected sex until you've seen a doctor and that includes oral as it can still be passed in this way. |

Not necessarily, it can be passed at any time but as you say, in most people the virus is dormant and people never experience symptoms. |

Taking acyclovir, low dose daily can reduce the risk of passing it on. For the most part it is just an annoying skin rash though some people do have worse symptoms than others.
Always let your prospective partner know and play safe.

Actually 90% of people with genital herpes are unaware/undiagnosed (google it). 25% of Americans have it (which is about the global average), its a bit less common in the UK.
It is highly contagious (just like the cold sore version) and condoms are not that effective at stopping the spread, neither is acyclovir. I think it only halves the probability. So if you've had sex with 4 different people, then chances are you've had sex with someone with genital herpes.
To further compound things. STD clinics don't test for it unlike HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea, and chlamydia. It's not considered a life threatening condition (just like cold sores or chicken pox etc.) so the health care profession don't seem to take it that seriously, but we as a society heavily stigmatise against it, as it's a sexually transmitted disease as opposed to a facially/airborne transmitted disease.
Oh and you can catch it from receiving oral sex from someone who has facial herpes (cold sores) which about 80% of the UK population have. So maybe make sure that the guy who goes down on you gets tested, if he's in the lucky 20% who doesn't have it then you're fine, otherwise he needs to use a dental dam.
(I personally think we as society overreact, and should just keep calm and carry on). Next thing we'll be afraid of catching chicken pox and will never touch anyone lol. |
