they usually flash you to say its ok to pull into the lane. trucker sign to say thanks is to alterate your indicators a couple of times.

They do it for trucks as it helps the overtaking truck to know when to pull in. I think they get in the habit and so do it for cars too.

If you have a trailer on or a car or van full so you can't see out the back they flash to let you know you have got passed them and can pull over.

or

Have you left your fog lights on?

or

Were you driving an open top jag in the nude? That might cause that response too?

its just courtesy to other long vehicles to let them know that their vehicle has cleared sufficiently to pull back in .. becomes a habit so some do it when its not required but just trying to be helpful

Trucker here, trucks will not normally flash you in, as you can see yourself when it is safe to pull in, does this happen to you a lot ?

Pretty much every truck I have ever over taken has done this as soon as I start to indicate to move back in.

As a trucker my self I'd say if you've got a short skirt on then they would flash you... Just wave back its being polite. Or once you have passed and your still in the middle lane and they flash is a way of saying you can pull in and not to hog the middle lane x

It's done to tell the overtaking vehicle that all is ok with the rear of their vehicle and that it is safe to pull in. used to be done more when vehicles used to rope and sheet.
