Driving down from Scotland to North Devon next week for a holiday and want to break up the journey about half way . Im looking for somewhere nice to stay for the night/ day out in the countryside preferably, any ideas would be appreciated.

Personally Billy, If I were doing that trip I'd be tempted to break the back of it in one go and get south of Bristol, perhaps staying somewhere near Chedder Gorge, which if you haven't been is very interesting to visit. The problem is thats' probably the best part of a 6 to 7 hour drive with breaks to be added into that. The benefit is Bristol in the holiday season is a huge traffic jam, so getting south of it will give you a pretty easy run on Day 2 so to speak.

Alternatives along the route would be anywhere around Gloucester & Cheltenham is nice. Stratford upon Avon which is a slight detour down M42/M40 is also very nice .

Even further North is in Ecclesall, Stafford, I stayed a few years ago at The George Hotel where the food was lovely and the hotel reasonable but it was some years ago so you may want to check if it's still there. It's around about J12 of M6 about 5 miles or so from the motorway but you can carry on down the A41 through Wolverhampton and West Brom before joining M5 at J2.

I think my favorites though would be around Cheltenham and Gloucester and take the traffic jam at Bristol the next day as just another day...

If you wanted to go to clubs too, well Xtasia is just off J2 (M5) and The Lodge is near Gloucester I believe.

Hope that helps a bit.
