Anti Depressants and Sex Drive

I know I have just posted on the support section. But was wondering does anti depressants affect peoples sex drive because mine is at zero. Am starting to feel better. When is a good time to come off them etc x |

I was only Citalopram off and on for years and it did spoil my sex drive. I made the mistake more than once of stopping them.because I felt better and ended up feeling like shit. Give yourself time xxx |

Anti depressants are notorious for affecting decent drive.
I took them for a few years and had zero sex drive. I could go forever (they are also given to guys with PE), but could feel no pleasure at all. Cost me a couple of relationships looking back.
It's not as simple as it coming back automatically when you come off, at least if the experiences related by many people around the world is to be believed. These are powerful chemicals that alter brains and it can take a long time for the brain to readjust.
I stopped five years ago after taking them for 9 years and I still feel I'm recovering. The sex drive thing has definitely got better I think, but it was very up and down (excuse the pun) for a long time. I also suffered lots of other side effects on them e.g. constipation and coming off them.
One thing - doctors tend to downplay the withdrawal symptoms that can occur for some people coming off them. My personal opinion is that people should come off them slowly - much slower than doctors often suggest, |

I took citalpran after my heart op for depression I didn't notice that much of a dip in sex drive.no they give me a testosterone injection every 8 weeks and they've had the opposite effect. May this might be something you could look in too |

Everyone reacts differently to anti-depressant medication. The newest group of anti-depressant medication is called the ssri's. They are not addictive. Unfortunately with this type of medication it isn't the case of one suits everyone and sometimes you have to try a few different ones till you find one that works for you.
If your libido has dropped then discuss this with your GP and they may recommend another one. However if this medication has worked for you it's weighing up the pros of cons of trying another one just because of your sex drive.
The NICE guidelines, which are written by the department of health, recommend that you stay on anti-depressant medication for a minimum of least 3 months after you feel better, as this had been researched to show less chance of relapse.
Also as said earlier, it's best to reduce slowly. So slowly reduce to lowest dose, and then take alternate days and so on.

Loss of libido is not something I've experienced. However I have had a partner who couldn't orgasm whilst taking them. She loved sex still but struggled to cum. The ones she did get were awesome though |

I suffer bipolar and yes it does in a big way
Speak with your Dr like I did he changed my meds and even though its not back to how it was I've got a sex drive finally after not wanting sex for 18 months |

I was also on Citalopram which completely killed my sex drive (well, it killed most things, I was very numb most of the time).
Like has been said, speak to your doctor and look at either weening you off them or changing your medication altogether. Don't just come off them because the resulting effects can be awful.
If you do look at weening yourself off them, make sure you take up some sort of exercise while the dosage is gradually reduced. - Helps regulate the release of seratonin and makes it a little easier to handle. x |

Gardening, walking etc all help with any imbalance.
To all the posts above, i commend you all for your honesty and openness, there can be such a stigma regarding the subject of depression and medication.

Anti depressants are a necessary for some people and can mean the difference between life and death. However there is a price to pay and lack of sex drive is one of them. You must trust what the professionals say and come off them at the pace you are told and have lots of counselling to make sure you are OK. Good luck and I hope you are well on the mend.

Sorry, I've posted on the same subject without noticing this thread but I *think* it massively affected my drive...I've only recently noticed a difference since I've come off the pills and I was asking if that is normal (i.e one's libido returning...) which, by the sounds of it, it is.
In response to "how do partners deal with it"...? well there are ways (more pills!). But that just became a physical routine as opposed to any kind of emotional activity to be brutally honest. Really not very nice... |
