I'd have said that it was more of a middle class thing, and couples only, at least back in the 70's and 80's. I wasn't in the scene then, but there must be a few on here now who were young swingers at that time. Putting adverts into contact magazines to find other couples. Wife swapping at "car key" parties.

I've never considered social classes in swinging but when I started it revolved around parties and the invited guests tended to be "white collar" rather than upper class and generally similar in outlook, I suppose to make the social aspect work.

It was also very much about couples as it started for me being invited to party as a plus one.

I’m sure I’ve read something at some point which comments on the official terminology of “swinging” originating in the WWII era. The term coming from the guys and gals in the barracks getting close. Living each day as if it were their last. But like I said just a story so maybe don’t quote me.

Lmk, thoughts are it’s accurate ✌️

Think it may surprise you guys but a lot of offers I get are from upper class people who want to be covert, secret parties, and of the day, sex is and can be enjoyed by everyone

I suspect it has always happened but on a smaller scale. Certainly there was hedonism amongst the more well heeled during the 1920s (a reaction to WWI and Spanish Flu). I read somewhere that “swinging” originated on US Airforce bases during WWII between the married couples who were officers. But like you I may have got that wrong.

Did a search…

“Few people know this, but swinging as a fad in America actually began in the 1950s with Air Force officers in California swapping wives.”

Don't know much about the demographic history of the scene. Since we've been on the scene we've met a right mixture of people and backgrounds. Some of the people we've met have been fascinating. However most people we've met on the scene are definitely not short of a quid or two. So although a broad church in terms of cultural capital there seems to be less people on the lower end of the economic spectrum on the scene in my experience.

However that may change as we are all getting poorer in real terms in this economic climate. Even the educated and white collar workers are feeling the pinch as the middle class (in terms of finances) shrinks and wealth distribution trickles backwards toward to top few in society.

Yeah, that’s what I am recalling. Wasn’t it a part of not knowing what was next and the group of officers almost indulging evening with their comrades better halves??? Lmk!

Trying to loop the “keys in a bowl” comment here. Does it originate from this or not at all…

I think (not old enough to know) that “swinging” has certainly changed. The stereotypical vision of swinging in the 1970s was more wife swapping parties, car keys in the bowel, pampas grass in the front garden.

I think a few things have influenced the change (and far broader variety) in swinging:

1. Availability (and variety) of porn sparking a desire to live out fantasies.

2. The Internet making connecting far far easier and quicker.

3. Increasing equality for women and acceptance of female sexuality and willingness to explore.

4. The film Eyes Wide Shut because it introduced the idea of high end orgies to a broader mainstream audience that started to get catered for.

It's an every class thing. Purely down to mindset rather than how you were brought up
