Disease risk higher for swingers than prostitutes
Kate Kelland
LONDON
Wed Jun 23, 2010 7:04pm EDTLONDON (Reuters) - Scientists studying swingers -- straight couples who regularly swap sexual partners and indulge in group sex at organized meeting -- say they have higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than prostitutes.
Health | Lifestyle
Dutch researchers publishing their work in the British Medical Journal showed that older swingers -- those over the age of 45 -- are particularly vulnerable and yet are a group largely ignored by healthcare services.
With estimates that the swinger population could be many millions across the world, the scientists said there was a risk this untreated group could act as an STI "transmission bridge to the entire population."
"Although exact estimates are unavailable, the swingers' population is probably large," wrote Anne-Marie Niekamp, who worked on the study with colleagues from Maastricht University.
The Dutch study analyzed the numbers of patients seeking treatment in 2007 and 2008 at three sexual health clinics in South Limburg in the Netherlands.
The clinics have recorded whether a patient is a swinger since the start of 2007, in an attempt to track infection rates among this group.
During the study period, there were just under 9,000 consultations at the three clinics. One in nine of the patients was a swinger, with an average age of 43.
Overall, combined rates of Chlamydia and gonorrhea were just over 10 percent among straight people, 14 percent among gay men, just under 5 percent in female prostitutes, and 10.4 percent among swingers, they found. And female swingers had higher infection rates than male swingers.
One in 10 older swingers had Chlamydia and around one in 20 had gonorrhea.
Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease among women and in 70 percent of cases causes no symptoms. The bacterial infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Gonorrhea is another bacterial infection which can also lead to infertility if left untreated.
Niekamp said that while other high risk groups, such as young straight people, gay men and prostitutes, were relatively easy for healthcare service to identify and target for advice and help, swingers were generally a hidden community.
"That makes them very hard to reach," she said in a telephone inter_iew. "Because they are so hidden and in some ways also stigmatized, it is hard for them to come forward for STI testing and treatment." |

"Article dated Jun 2010 which I found on medhelp.org. I found it quite interesting.
Rubber up"
Ah, but isn't it just a personal choice? Well, that's what a lot of people say on here! The problem is that there are COMMUNICABLE diseases around - and that is not everyone's choice. Condoms are protection - but not an absolute stopper so to add the risk for the sake of using none is irresponsible to all not just the individual.
As Shakespeare wrote; 'No man is an island'. |

"Doesn't surprise me in the slightest
The naivety of some comments on here when people say 'I trust my special friend to play safe with me.'"
This and the fact it is a prostitutes income, be that immoral or not, they can't & won't risk losing their livelihoods for a couple of hours of their time. |

Seems a bit exaggerated.Individual figures seem quite frightening. However, risk not too much greater. Straights 10%. swingers 10.4%.
0.4% higher risk. Gays 14%, Prostitutes 5%.
Interesting but not meaningful.
Goodness knows what the risk for a gay prostitute would be. Logic suggests somewhere between 5 and 14%? |

There are communicable diseases GUM clinics dont test for, that you can carry without symptoms for years. There are no guarantees, ever. Just be as safe as you can and get yourself checked regularly. |

Some people really shouldn't be allowed out on their own as they genuinely believe that bullshit. |

If they've not posted data on the number of people tested then those numbers can be taken with a pinch of salt but thats all. No-one makes up those things to stop you having fun, just to show you how likely you are to have that fun ruined at a later date.
As they say, the swingers population is somewhat stigmatised and closeted. So probably only a small number came forward for testing. So if more people went for testing that infection rate would probably rise.
And that figure was 5 years ago, it's probably higher now anyway. I still don't get barebackers in this day and age, knowing what diseases are out there and how they can wreck lives.
Personal preference be fucked. One choice I have no respect for. |

Does it? The same logic suggests that a straight prostitute would be somewhere between 5% and 10% but wait! who are these 5% prostitutes then? |

"plus i think not a large percentage of swingers have seen the inside of a gum clinic"
I'm amazed at the amount of couples who claim they dont need to get tested as they only BB with each other. What about oral sex, or play in group situations when you dont know who's fingers have been where?
Then I saw it all, when someone asked what a GUM clinic was. |

"Did they mention how many of the swingers were also on the game?"
I would have thought prostitutes would have got enough sex through their work? Or perhaps they are looking for satisfying sex? |

Prostitute's sex lives, I imagine, are rather like the cars of professional mechanics. Superb or completely crappy.
Get home from work, either still full of enthusiasm or not wanting to even think about it. It can be a big mistake to turn a hobby into a career.
From the OP 'One in 10 older swingers had Chlamydia and around one in 20 had gonorrhoea.'
Rather concerning - bareback with 10 different people, odds on you've got Chlamydia, (or, unbeknown to you your trusted partner has).
20 different people and you've probably got clap too.
One bareback gang bang could be disastrous.
Take care and stay safe out there. |
