Its true that famous male comedians outnumber famous female comedians in quantity but of the real quality comedians I'd say they were equal in number.

I don't think thats true. I can count on one hand how many funny women i've met in my life, not women with a sense of humour, but funny.
Men do seem to be funnier, maybe because we've had to show off more to get laid, reproduce? who knows. |

At workshops for stand up there are often more women than men. Same for open mic nights. But paid work.... Promoters know folk prefer men so only book the odd quirky bird.
Not many women make it through to good paid work. Even if they get paid, the men objectify them sexually and it takes from the act. The best comediennes have an armour against this. Being fat, tall, slapstick, lesbian acting.... Etc.....
My housemate was a comedian when I did nurse training. Male. *sigh* |

Many years ago I read that some research had been done on this (Scientific American, I think). It is due to the difference in the visualisation/spatial awareness part of the brain in men and women, it's the same reason women find it hard to understand maps! |

Its a point to consider but a lot of women (wrongly in my opinion) hide their humour because they think men want a certain type of woman and play up to the guys ego. Or maybe a lot of women feel they need to hide their innate wit because men find it intimidating. |

I think there are actually a lot more funny women than we think. French and Saunders, Caroline Aherne, Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, Sarah Silverman, Joan Rivers (she was funny before she got weird), Gina Yashere, Sarah Millican, Miranda Hart, the list goes on. The problem might actually be with the TV schedulers that we don't see more of them, not with women not being funny. |

Most comedians use their own culture/appearance etc for their jokes! Eddie murphy/Richard prior-black, chubby brown-fat, billy Connolly goes on and on about Scottish stuff, lee Evans about being skinny and geeky, Michael McIntyre about being camp, there's very few comics that don't draw on their own life for their material, it's definitely not a thing specifically for woman. |

I think humour bounces off each other it's hard to be funny and have a laugh with someone you don't really connect with personality wise, some people I talk to I can laugh and crack of funny comments one after another with others it's like pulling teeth out a dead donkeys head, so if very few women you meet are funny maybe the problem lays closer to home and your not setting off the right signals to have numerous conversations with, if its one or two then the problem could lay with them it's its all women it's doubtful it's them |

I must admit i can't think of too many female comedians i find funny. There are some good female comedy actors, but Joan Rivers is about the only female stand up that id pay to watch. Then again there are plenty of shit and overrated male comedians. Can there be any worse female comedians than Stephen K Amos?. |
