I was struggling to keep mine under control,

Me too, proably eatng the wrong things, I'm on insulin and finding the right type of insulin was a struggle to work out.

Only when I went on the Libre2 glucose monitoring system did it start to level out as it was constantly showing sugar levels on my phone, the finger prick system is more accurate but erratic as it depends on when you do the test, the Libre 2 helps me keep a more level reading and I adjust what I eat/drink according to the reading which you can't do with finger pricks.

My advice is ask your diabetic nurse to put you on Libre 2, they are reluctant as it is very expensive.

Just one point to be aware of, if you need a medical for your driving Licence (truck/bus etc.) DVLA only accept fnger prick tests if you are on insulin.

Libre is the only way to go. You don't say if you're type 1 or 2 OP. Regardless, look at what you are eating first.

I’m type 1 , 14 years also diagnosed with PTSD from working in the cops , on lots of different meds which all have an impact on my sugars.

Pumps are good but you have to be on it constantly, libre sensors are great but I find every day is different. It’s impossible to be a perfect diabetic unless you sit in a chair all day eating the same food.

My advice is do your best and get on with your life. It can certainly affect your mental health because you always tell yourself you should be doing better .

Give yourself a break and enjoy yourself because in the end we all die of something

Male type 2, since age 40, have taken the usual steps diet first then tablets, more tablets went onto insulin.

Really strict diet no carbs, 2 days a week fasting, reduced weight, able to revert to tablets.

Moved back to a more normal diet had hard time controling with diet been tea total and tablets. Then found trulicity

Level everyday after secound weekly injection.

Now the Austrailan producer cannot keep up with world wide demand had to move to an alternative! Apparentley its being used as a dieting drug.

Dexcom One i'm finding to be a lot more accurate than the Libre and you can have it on your tummy (and you can legally drive with it there unlike the Libre)

My control (Type 1) was amazing before Xmas, so much so the Consultant said i could take my foot off the gas and give myself a break. It's hard for people to understand but i read a study that showed Type 1's have to make 180 more mathmatical calculations per day than a normal person... and some of them in a state of hypo... and whats the first thing that goes in a hypo?

Had covid again over Christmas and now my control is shit. needing more insulin than before (same happened last time i had covid my ratios have gone from 1:1 to 3:1 and 3.5:1 depending on the time of day)

what i have not figured is BG control and Swinging.

So far i've let myself ride a little high knowing id burn it off rather than take on extra carbs)

however the downside to that is being thirsty and peeing more and as a guy in a sex club i don't want that. Next visit im going to try a more in range target and see how i go having to take on more carbs.

Any other T1's have tips?

I'd ask about the strict diet and weight loss options, which have been shown to be very helpful, leading to remission for some people.

Type 1 for over 30 years.

Get a dexcom g6 or g7 and a tandem x2 pump with control iq software - you create a closed loop.

Stopping yourself from getting the lows is also going to stop a lot of the highs.

Work with your diabetes nurse. If you are t1 do not talk to anyone at your GP surgery, they are idiots fixated on t2.

If you’re going to eat something sugary eat it with something protein/fatty (have fruit with a handful of nuts for eg) as the fat slows the sugar from entering your system. Do the reverse if you’re treating a hypo (no fat!)

Your diabetes team gave access to a diabetes psychologist to support you with the mental load - ask your team if you want an appointment.

Join social media diabetes groups and talk to Americans, they’re generally much more informed and engaged than us. You may learn much.

Interesting that you found Americans more informed, I've found the opposite. They have no DAFNE equivalent and (as a generalisation among the ones ive chatted to) have fairly bad control... especially those with bad healthcare cover

I expect that on the diabetes groups you probably only get the most enraged who self select to belong to those groups.

It is chilling, reading of people insulin rationing or actively going into DKA so the hospital will patch them up for free, then are released to go back into DKA in a loop until their bodies give out. People die in the groups from lack of insulin, it’s horrendous.

Yeah i can't quite get over how bad its is over there.

I'd had two work colleagues in the US, Educated people one became Type 2 and one late onset Type 1.

Both were seeing "specialists" having been referred from their family clinics and both were getting appalling advice. The T1 in particular. The info they got about carb counting was awful and no-one even mentioned the glycaemic index and the thought of splitting doses to cope with large meals or high fat high carb meals was never mentioned to them.

Fortunately the T1 did end up on a pump quite quickly but to this day yo-yos so hard

Dafne is too prescriptive and a bit insulting. The carb counting is useful but they believe that they know the doses that everyone will need which is a fallacy.

I always use jelly babies for a hypo so I get no spike. Information that would have helped me more 30 years ago.

When did you do it because I don’t recall any preset dosaging. The whole point of the course is that you learn to dose what your need for your own body

It wasn't preset doses. It was the workbook that you used. It had you pointing out where someone's doses were wrong because they had a blood sugar of 11.2

We all agreed that wasn't bad.

It was just the belief that they had that it would work for everyone. I followed their advice during the course and my sugars were worse than normal.

I took the parts of it on board that worked for me but we are all different and dafne is just too prescriptive.

Love the insights from everyone. Will need a lot more info from OP to give proper advice. Personalky im type 1 and since moving to libre 2 and a pump my control is so much better! Hba1c is at 54 now which is unbelievable!

Must admit the main reason i havent had any in person meets or clubs is because im worried how strangers may react to the devices attached to my body.

Dont fancy switching to pens just for a meet as i can get the dosage wrong and end up going high or low.

Does anyone with a pump and/or sensor have any advice or experiences they can share?

Interesting. Not my experience at all. It's true that they like you in a certain range but they were quite flexible with us.

I honestly feel DAFNE made a bigger impact on me than the CGM

Sadly i don't have a pump so cannot really say.

However i do struggle with BG at clubs. The problem is you never really know what kind of activity you are going to enjoy or what your reaction to it will be and that makes it difficult to figure out how to deal with BG and Insulin.

Most of our visits my wife tends to be more active than me and well... no-one is really looking at me. We tend to go for gloryhole, cinema, fun or couples room fun rather than straight swap.

Met a lovely couple in october and told them in advance and they were fine with it.

Biggest issue is checking readings on your phone. But the club we visit we just dive into a private room to check.

If you look at my pics I have my diabetes kit on show, and always check that a guy is aware of it before we meet. To the best of my knowledge it’s only ever put one person off. To hell with other people and speculating what they might want, this is your one life - live it in a way you enjoy!

Type 1 here, a lot of advise good advise here, I find diet, exercise and a general healthy life style works best, a DAFNE course (free on NHS) is worth while, lets you meet other T1’s and the nurses know their stuff.

Diabetes is the only disease that you can control…

Good luck!!

Fuck sorry to hear this because it’s my absolute nightmare .

This can happen to any of us and WILL happen if you don’t get under control.

It’s a serious shower of shot condition and we are the ones who shovel crap into our bodies.

To those of you that say blah blah blah no help nurses rubbish doctors crap I strongly humbly suggest that you scream and shout and get the advice you need because your life depends on it.

Sorry to be dramatic but I’ve ruined my body by not l’Island I’d hate others to do the same.

Stay frosty everyone.

Been type 2 for about 12 years. Yo-yo diets and lack of motivation. Slowly declining. Met a friend who is at the point of amputation if not very careful. Hit me hard that that is what I was heading towards. Metformin and now on gliclizide. The gliclizide really helps but can’t rely on that alone. So willpower to change eating habits has to be first line and now exercise 4 times a week. BM has stabilised awaiting review and blood tests soon. Old saying you are what you eat. Lower carbs and reduce processed food. Fruit veg and a healthy diet.

Damn that sucks. Im so sorry to hear youve had to go through that. Iv been type 1 since i was 18 months old and ever since i was a child the doctors have always warned that it could end up happening if i didnt control my sugars.

In my teenage years i decided to rebel and not look after myself. Went a long time with no consequences but now at the age of 30 im starting to lose my eye sight. Sugars are under full control and have been for around 4-5 years but it seems the damage has already been done.

Fingers crossed it doesnt get worse!

Although at this point iv pretty much realised diabetes will probably be the reason i die so now im just tryna get through and live as comfortably as possible until that inevitable day comes.
