So, I was perusing a lovely profile and it stated that they liked it when people dressed-up for socials. It then added something like, "Ladies, jeans and t-shirt is not dressing-up." And that got me thinking.
It can be, can't it? (I'm not here seeking to discredit that profile or their preferences, just using it as a springboard to discussion.)
For a good while, Alice would go to social meets in a top that held her in all the best ways and jodhpurs. I can appreciate that if the other woman had spent hours in make-up and selected a beautiful dress, or seductive skirt, she might feel like Alice hadn't made as much effort as her. But no guy ever seemed anything less that DELIGHTED! 
So, I'm thinking that "dressing-up" is really just about the effort that goes into it. And some jeans can look amazing on the right person and very very flattering. Similarly, we have some suggestive or revealing t-shirts that I think would count.
What do you think? |

I think Jeans and a t-shirt can look dressy depends on the type , paired with the right shoes etc.
I mean for a social I tend to be understated dress wise depending on the weather. Still nice but not what I would call dressed up. If it was a group social evening thing then I would be more glam. |

I assume through their perspective, meeting through fab you possibly meaning dressing sexily, offering almost availably.
Skirt/dress and stockings as opposed to jeans/trousers or tights.
Though yes, jeans and T-shirt can look great. |

Agree. Jeans can be smart and look nice but wouldn’t class it as dressing up.
Dress / skirt for me, shirt and trousers (chinos maybe) for a guy. |

Some people pull off a jeans and tee shirt look with the right footwear and belt. If the tee shirt is almost a tailored fit to. Some people carry off the look well. Others don't. A collar does look much better and I guess a polo shirt is entry standard. |

Once for a group social I dressed up. Suit trousers, white shirt, tie, waistcoat nice shoes. I stuck out a little bit but in a good way and got quite a few compliments. Now I try and dress up a little bit every time I go out. |

I very much agree. I should clarify that I'm thinking primarilly about women. I personally wouldn't feel good wearing a t-shirt to any kind of meet.
But as much as Alice loves wearing dresses and revealing easy-access skirts, I think her features look insanely hot in tight jeans and the right t-shirt!  |

Interesting.
Strangely enough, I happen to think a woman looks their sexiest (to me) in tight dress jeans, tucked in smart T-shirt, high heels, jewelry, and light make-up.
So I have no problems with that. |

Honestly, if someone is that fussed about dress sense I'd probably just give them a miss.
I think I'm usually overdressed for everything, just because of what I prefer to wear day to day.
If you look good and feel good and have made an effort, it doesn't matter what the actual items are  |

If you are going to tell me that jeans and a t-shirt aren't dressing up, you'd better be planning on being suited and booted.
Fact is, most people who seem to expect a woman to be in dress and heels, invariably turn up in casual short and jeans. |

I think unfortunately this is one of those things that for both genders is fucked up and generally is about weight too due to unconsci0us bias.
Some gym-fit young skinny person looks "smarter" in a fitted t-shirt and jeans than someone who's a bit bigger in the same or someone in comfy clothes.
It's also something that makes me cringe, when there's a club (swingers or normal club) with a shirt and shoes dress-code, it just screams chavvy to me and doesn't show any self expression or individuality.
You see legions of orange woman dragging their husbands who have a nose full of cheap into clubs with awful music all looking the same.
I'll get suited up for a wedding and certain special occasions but fortunately my days of having to wear a suit and *dress up" every day for work are over.
If you can pull off jeans and look smart and comfortable in yourself go for it.
But if it's colder a nice jumper or even a long sleeve t-shirt can look just as smart as a shirt.
Use your clothes to be comfy and show yourself. |

The term dressed up is very much open to interpretation.
I think you can look like you "dressed up" in jeans and t-shirt and seen some ladies look stunning in jeans and t-shirt with right shoes.
I find people often use dressed up when they want to refer to formal or smart casual.
I've never considered any t-shirt however fitted to fall under smart casual. |

Wear what you wear, if someone is going to judge you for the clothes you wear on a social then are you really a good match anyway?
Obviously you should always judge someone for wearing shoes with jeans though |
