I think most guys do it thinking that it extends the range of women who they might get a chance of meeting. A lot of people put 'size, age, race, shoe size, favourite pizza topping no issue'. It's desperation in a lot of cases.
Personally as a 'younger guy' I'm completely open on my profile about my preferences. Numerical age doens't mean anything to me, but skin age does. I'd definitely consider meeting a woman of 50 who's spent her life keeping fit and eating healthily (and have done so), but I wouldn't meet a 30 year old woman who's spent the last 15 years smoking, doing drugs and drowning life out with booze and abused their body.
