Are you saying that if the most stunning person of your particular choice wanted to meet and fuck your brain out, that you would think twice if there were lacking in spelling and incorrect grammar in their profile and contact with you? |

Yes actually. Its all part of the attraction. If they're dyslexic and say so up front, fair enough. But someone who doesn't know the difference between Your and You're would put me off. Regardless of looks. |

No! But I won't deny that a badly written profile or message, incessant use of text speak and generally bad use of language and grammar do annoy me, perhaps I'm just old fashioned and have standards. |

Respect we all have our preferences, just sometimes wonder how some people who do have certain disabilities as dyslexia might feel when they pop in to such a thread as this..

To us, it's irritating to be honest, sorry. Our encounters have always been with hot guys certainly. But ones that could also be erudite enough to get beyond the first round of messaging.
By the way - and this is not an excuse for it - the use of discreet over discrete is an Americanism. They have a lot to answer for hey.
And of course that makes me sound like a dinosaur. My 22 year old son tells me that often enough...

Fair play for being honest..
now your broadening the debate out and i would agree with some of what you say..
my point is that for some people it can be quite hard for them to feel included if they have certain disabilities etc when they see such a thread..
standards by all means, perhaps we differ on what are the things worth getting peeved about.. |

I did say dyslexia wasn't a problem. But with dyslexia you'd expect a fair few words to be spelled incorrectly or in the wrong order. Not just mistaking your,-you're, there- their etc and using text speak. |

My partner is dyslexic, and has no problem with the difference in meaning of similarly spelled words being explained to her ...as long as it's not in a patronising way. I accept that some might be more sensitive.
'Discrete swinging' is almost an oxymoron.
I guess that common usage/spelling might eventually make 'discreet' redundant; many people already use the 'other' word, when meaning either discrete or discreet. They do of course have completely different meanings, but at some point common usage may dictate otherwise. |

South Birmingham waiting for the bf to come back after crimbo |
I've commented on this a few months ago, I blame the teachers in schools these days.
My parents always insisted that correct spelling, punctuation and grammar was paramount when my sister and I were young, as did our teachers. We had numerous spelling tests every week throughout our education and it certainly did us no harm.
My children have recently been through the education system and at each and every Parents' Evening for the past 20 years, I have had the same question for the English teachers, "What's happening to the standard of spelling these days?" To which I have had the same response every year, "It's not seen as important these days, so we concentrate on the context of the students' writing, as long as they get their points across, the spelling doesn't matter".
As you can see, I'm from the old school of thinking, besides, when I was sitting my 'O' level English, we had points deducted from our overall scores for shoddy spelling and grammar.
IMO the advent of spellcheckers on computers have both good and bad points (good for those with genuine issues such as dyslexia, but bad in that it just makes people lazy), even this piece of technology can't differentiate between the grammatical need for there, their or they're.
Don't get me started on text-speak ... awful misuse of the English language. Everyone who knows me, knows that even in texts I will always use correct spellings, punctuation and grammar, and if I'm not 100% sure of the spelling of a word, I will use an alternative word rather than let my standards slip |

As long as they use a reasonable level of punctuation, are capabable enough to string a few decent words together and are able to get their meaning across, then no, it doesn't bother me.
Text speech or a block of unpunctuated text is a different matter and I tend to avoid it as life is too short. |

I notice almost every spelling and grammar error (what can I say, I'm anal about it) but I still make cock ups myself...I've been in therapy for 3 months now after using a comma instead of a semi-colon in a thread about VWE gentlemen some time ago...

I'm just amused about all the threads where people have said they have preferences for who they will and won't meet, and those preferences are to be taken as sacrosanct, not up for discussion and in no way shallow.
I say I won't meet people who I think I won't be able to have a decent conversation with because they don't know the difference between a few basic words/phrases, and i'm evil apparently.
Strange place. |

Yes actually. Its all part of the attraction. If they're dyslexic and say so up front, fair enough. But someone who doesn't know the difference between Your and You're would put me off. Regardless of looks."

I just ran your profile text through a grammar checker.
Just to let you know, it found 6 errors
Grammar
3 issues
Pronoun agreement (1)
Sentence structure (1)
Wordiness (1)
Style and Word Choice
3 issues
Writing style (2)
Vocabulary use (1)
Always makes me laugh when people pull others up on spelling and grammar when there own lacks.
Us though, we wouldn't normally pull people up on spelling and grammar as apart from our's isn't good enough to criticize others, we are not looking for fun not to pull others down. |

"Ours has 17, but guess what.
Tough tits
I loves you guys (note deliberate grammatical mistake) xx
"
Just impressed my profile only had 6 mistakes on whatever checker you used. My English language A level clearly wasn't a complete waste of time. |

Better than ours!
I think mine has got worst over the years as started programming at about 7 years old and since then have done a couple of computer science courses and can now program in several different languages like although my flash is rusty
I read that multilingual are more likely to make errors with there primary language but not sure if it's the same for them that can program in different languages, I can do around 14 afterall |

Perhaps something we can all agree on, technology has eroded the correct use of language? |

"Does it matter..
helps if you can string words together.
Yes!
No!
Are you saying that if the most stunning person of your particular choice wanted to meet and fuck your brain out, that you would think twice if there were lacking in spelling and incorrect grammar in their profile and contact with you? "

This can only go in one direction and have an obvious result. Down and Dirty. Been on so many forums in a variety of sites and when the spelling police start correcting others posts it usually ends in acrimony and ill will. Better to see the main thread of the arguement of posting than to pick it to pieces and cause offence. |

Oh come on. A spelling mistake is different to just plain laziness or being thick! |

Totally agree, we all make mistakes and it will be a very dull place if we all try and pick up on them and point out every single one. But we have all read stuff akin to what I have written above, and judging by the amount of threads from people saying they get fed up with one line messages saying "wanna fuk" it does appear that laziness is pervasive! |

And that's also fair enough. You should see our inbox...!
We find the fakers more tiresome though because you actually invest time in them before realising they're not real. At least with this issue it's something you can move on from straight away... |

The English language goes back to the invasion of the Angles, Jutes and Saxons after the Romans left Britain in the fifth century. It has Germanic origins that stretch back to the Bronze Age and beyond.
The modern printing press was invented in 1436 C.E. but standardised spellings were still not really used until around the 1770's when various dictionaries were written.
So you spelling nazi's (small n deliberate), I say this;
When the standardised written form of English catches up with it's spoken form I might consider knuckling down and sorting my occasional spelling lapses and somewhat indifferent attitude to strict grammer. Until then I am largely unmoved by this relatively modern tend of the past 240 or so years.
So give me a poke around, say 3140 C.E. and I will take the issue far more seriously... |

Text speak ia this generations abbreviations and acronyms. I rememver my grandparents constantly scolding for using words like "can't" and "didn't"
Poor spelling and grammatical skills is not a sign of someone being uneducated. I know many people who on paper are illiterate, I would think twice about entering into a debate with them. Equally I know some exceptionally literate people who have the social skills of a stone!

"Of and have wind me up.
I wouldn't 'of'.
I could 'of', it's bloody have!"
This reminded me of a guy at school who always said of. Our Headmaster & English Teacher had clearly had enough one day.
"What is this verb 'To of'?" he bellowed at him and made him write I have, you have, we have, they have, a hundred times.
He never said of in English lessons again, once out of class he reverted to type |
