Parasocial relationships are one-sided relationships, where one person extends emotional energy, interest and time, and the other party, the persona, is completely unaware of the other's existence. Parasocial relationships are most common with celebrities, organizations (such as sports teams) or only fans and anime
What's peoples thoughts on this and have people noticed the increased prevalence in today's society |

I can't say if they've increased.
I think it's way easier to believe you 'know' someone now due to social media. However I have an acquaintance (who I've had to block on FB) who talks about Elvis Presley as if she knew him and he was long gone when sm came along. |

Really interesting subject.
I believe that the prevalence of parasocial relationships has increased, mediated by social media, due to the perceived accessibility of social media influencers and personalities.
YouTube is a perfect example where access to a content creator via Patreon, Discord, and other means can easily create the impression of a relationship where there may be none. I’m sure TikTok has a similar phenomenon.
It’s a lot easier to establish a parasocial relationship with a YouTuber or podcaster than it is with a TV personality. |
