We're ok with people who just say 'hi, how are you' on first contact.
We definitely look for a bit more signs of intelligent life once the conversation gets flowing, but we don't think it is reasonable to expect the first contact to be essay length.
What about you?
How do you make contact? With a one liner, or a few pages of auto-biography?
And how do you like to be contacted if you are being contacted for the first time? A simple hi? Or do you need more to perk up your interest? |

We look for something that shows they've read our profile but definitely agree that we don't expect too much.
Feel it's hard enough for guys here without expecting a first message to be some nuanced comedic masterpiece

I don't give or want an essay but something a bit more imaginative than hi how are you is appreciated. I usually open with something light, how they respond to it shows if we will get on or not. |

Yep - gotta show a genuine reason for interest in the people you're contacting - not just astroturfing the entire site!
Helps to show you might have a personality, not just a hardon, too.

I do read profiles and always try to show that I have read them when I message. I read some profiles and know the lady/ couple wouldnt be into me so I leave them alone. First message is always difficult though |

It comes down to how hot I think they are. The message itself is kinda irrelevant. I'll check profile first then either politely reply, reply with intention of the conversation progressing or ignore... depending on initial message.
As for making first contact, if there's anything on bio I can include, then, great. If not, generally a simple hello |

I always read the profile and try to include something in the message to show that. Trying to show your interests without writing too much and waffling can be hard which I also think puts people off |

in general, just a 'hi' is suffice enough to start a conversation i think.
but if i'm messaging, and there's something on their profile that i really click with, i'll usually include that.

If I send a message while I might say Hi I might also reference any status update they've made or alternatively just send them a compliment such as having laughed out loud at their profile or how good they looked in their pictured. Nothing vulgar. Just polite and respectful.
Sometimes I get a response, more often then not I dont |

Hi, how are you? Lol!
Seriously though, I try to include at least one word of more than a syllable to give some idea that I’ve got a brain…., although looking at your profile might make anyone tongue tied! |

"hi,
Read your profile, I think I may fit what you are looking for, why not look at my profile and see?
Happy fabbing"
Normally elaborate on the details a bit more, but that's a basic opening message format
