I've adapted it slightly so I count 1 when I breath in and 2 when I breath out. 1 in 2 out. And visualise the numbers and concentrate on the breaths each time so my mind is only occupied on that.
Takes some training but hopefully you'll get there eventually..
Doesn't work if i wake up after I've had a drink and my mind is really racing tho.
