Topless on UK beaches
Jump to: Newest in thread
I choose the location carefully. We find a fairly secluded section of beach and try to be a bit discreet. It doesn't matter where we go someone*always* decides to plonk their family of five children next to us, regardless of how many other empty sections of beach there are, then glare at me. |

I got asked to cover up my boobs at beach before as was told women must not be topless. I asked the official can men be topless of which was told well obviously they can.
I said great then as I am actually a man so will just be embracing my male usage right then . Was quite funny the guy didn’t know what to do so walked off . My friends and me thought it was amusing . |

Think it depends where you are tbh. Time of day How far away from the general drones you sit
People tend to follow patterns and congregate in a mass I observe here. If you walk 5min further up there is no one within easy viewing unless you are whipping out binoculars or camera closeups
Big difference between boobs and nudity and judging by half the bikinis women wear these days under age 30. It’s questionable if they can really be called clothing or covering at best of times |

Yeah I agree with this. I don't think it's appropriate on certain beaches where all the kids are making sandcastles but a little away from the main crowd is fine

Absolutely. I'm no prude but I've been amazed this summer by some of the barely-there swimsuits on display! Tiny thongs and teeny bikinis seem to be becoming the norm.

Seems strange how in Europe it’s normal for women to be topless sunbathing and no one batters and eye yet in UK it’s almost scandalous! Haha
Yet weirdly the family that have young children and tut at the topless female then proceed to strip their very young child to run around/in sea naked. Which in my opinion is out of order! |

Probably not in the UK, just generally all the nice beaches that are comfortable to lay and tan, doing so in the appropriate weather tends to draw crowds to the beach.
Europe not so bad as they tend to be bigger more well suited beaches |

I'm pretty sure it's legal and you're well within your rights to go topless at the beach. I think the only time it's considered a violation of the law is when it's being done knowingly to cause hurt and distress, akin to an act of public indecency
I only know this as I've a friends whose Gf is usually topless at the beach, she feels breasts are over sexualised and it should be normal for women to be topless as it is for men. |

Well exactly.. Not everybody wants to see it. Bit of mindfulness avoids conflict"
So do you keep a t shirt on when on the beach ? |

I say just don't cause offence. If it caused offence me taking my top off... I wouldn't do it. Try it in more Conservative countries and see. Its a public space so be aware of Context and surroundings and behave accordingly. Not really such a problem is it? |

I dont find guys with there tops ofd upsetting,

I'm curious about the volume of posters who think it's important to keep boobs covered up if there are kids around. I'm pretty sure kids aren't offended by boobs!
It's difficult to go against the norm, but the more women who go topless on the beach (if they want to) the more it's normalised.
Sadly, boobs have been over sexualised in the UK for a looooong time! On the whole I think there are some overly prurient attitudes to the human body in the UK.

Even abroad it's not that common anymore. It used to be unusual to see people sunbathing with a top on
Wouldn't it be nice just to be free so women could go top less if they wished.
Nudist or naturist beaches could be clearly identified and then parents could avoid them if they wished |

It's not always acceptable,
My mum used to go topless every time she could including the front garden
People would take the piss
Even 4/5 years after.. not being very happy poked about Nudity especially by those less intelligent and more into perverted Say-so, Discomfort
"Know who we're going on holiday with" mate
Gettin' there
Wanna get some holiday snaps
Natural breasted women do appeal but how much & What about the life journey that comes with it
Small court & No-one gives the pleasure back or they hide wanking at you in the daytime |

That's just childish. But if you're OK needlessly causing offence that's good for you. I'd rather not. |

Yes it is acceptable to go topless I would say in any location where men are topless, just because some view more/less flesh as sexual is on them - there was a time you couldn’t show your ankles incase some prude got their back up! Embrace your body and if people want to demonise you it says more about them as person than you! And the people saying to protect children is silly - breast is best and you can only say this if you attend mommy n baby groups and shield your child’s eyes from other moms feeding their babies. Children should learn that sexualising a neutral body part is not acceptable |

The ones who are put out are probably the same usual members of the anti breast feeding league. |

You're actually coming across very hypocritical! One rule for you and the rest of men but another rule for women. Not acceptable |

Read what I wrote rather than what you think I wrote. I didn't write it's different for men or women. Read the situation and don't cause offence. Which happily is probably most beaches and situations. Sometimes it won't be. |

Always, just got back from 2 weeks Perranporth, always put a cpl of windbreaks up so young children can't see but everyone who walks past seem to enjoy the view, even the beach officer regularly walked past for a look smiled any carried on, never had any issues in the last 5 year's we've been going there x |

I'd go top less on a beach no problem, and do. Take my 10 uear old and we all strip off without issue. Try to go somewhere quiet but that's our preference anyway as can't stand noisy beaches really. But in answer to your question, yes topless should be fine regardless of if there's kids around. Kids don't care! |

I was watching a video last night of a woman asking another woman to cover up (she was wearing a bikini) because her husband was looking at her .
It's not kids who are the problem with women going topless it's other adults |

Although not got into the topic of is it actually ‘healthy’ in fairness that goes to us men too that go topless but more with women there is a stigma that topless sunbathing for women can increase breast cancer.
No real definitive prove either for or against but something to consider, or sunburnt nipples! |

Thankfully as a trans woman I have an awesome sense of humour with it all and enjoy pointing out lunacy logic of things at times this beach guy was one of those times and it was entertaining to see the reaction/ confusion
Didn’t even get a chance to start illuminating him on the legal aspect to correct him about uk nudity / semi nudity laws

I think we have caused our own problems. My mother always taught me that there was nothing to be ashamed of with regards to our bodies. I always saw her topless or naked. Today we hide our bodies. Mainly because of what 'other people' might think. Society tells you what to do and it should be personal choice |

I don’t see why the presence of children should matter. If you’re getting your tits out for sexual reasons then that should only be happening in an area where EVERYONE is consenting to that sort of thing; otherwise I’m assuming that the toplessness is non-sexual. If it isn’t sexual, what does it matter if children are there? |

Yep correct, but then on the other hand we've got music videos etc with barely-dressed women spouting all sorts of sexual references all aimed at a younger audience. |

Other countries it’s no hassle to go topless but uk I get looks of disapproving looks. I don’t care about their delicate sensibilities really so carry on.
We have nudist beach in Brighton but I don’t go there for full tanning because last time was a lot of guys walking past with cameras so that is not happening |

Its quite an interesting topic question this one as the actual law in the UK is it's not an offence to strip off in public, but naturally there are caveats attached to this. It can become an offence if being naked causes distress or alarm to others. Especially if done in the presence of minors.
The irony is UK women seldom sunbathe topless here in the UK but happily do so in such as for example Spain where it is actually illegal to go topless. Its just that the Spanish just never enforce the law so everyone just gets on with it.
If you're in the UK and really want to then just go to a designated nudist beach.

Been on that very beach also with a random guy wandering round with his camera. He didn't last too long. His camera was ripped from his hands and duly tossed into the sea.

Agree totally. If guys can be topless why can’t ladies? It’s only a pair of boobs for God’s sake, why would anyone take offense? |

I saw a thread the other day saying the common perception if you're single lady naked on the beach, you're "up for it". The only thing I'm up for on a nudist beach is icecream! I go there to relax and sunbathe but can't as too many perverts come and sit by me staring at me. It's so off putting, I just want to fall asleep but can't. If I wanted action etc I go hanging out in the dunes. |

It's not illegal to be nude in Spain, let alone topless. There are many signposted and recognised nudist beaches. They even have a uniformed patrol near the dunes at Maspalomas. The mayor of Vera Playa has encouraged nudity to increase tourism.
There may places with bye laws that stop topless people from leaving the beach and going topless onto the promenade or town, but I'm not aware of any beach that has a law against exposing your chest. For a start, it would be sexual discrimination to allow men but not women.
