I personally also enjoy a good autocorrect when someone is bang into writing something intense, such as 'she socked my cook and I gave her a good ducking'

Frustrating isn't it? Almost as annoying as having numerous spelling mistakes on their profile bio

I'm quite good at spelling and always have been but I know I make mistakes. I have two brothers who are dyslexic, one extremely so, I therefore have a lot of sympathy with people who struggle to spell.

Of course I get a bit twitchy about bad grammar and spelling but I try not to judge people for it because I know it doesn't define a person.

We don't mind the spelling mistakes or bad grammar, it doesn't define them.

Certain words can cause an eye roll though, yous (mentioned above) for example.

Absolutely chuckle at some typos though, both sent and received.

I can spell, most of the time, I just can't type at times.

I personally know some dyslexic people and their struggles. Especially those treated as idiots at school and diagnosed later in life.

But there is a general decline in the spelling and grammar abilities of the population.

This is most likely the fault of the education system I think.

I think we notice the spelling and grammar abilities because we rely on the written word far more now than ever before. Texts, emails, internet forums etc all require the ability to use basic spelling and grammar. It's unlikely that I would have communicated with any of the people in this thread pre 2000 and certainly not in writing. If I'd spoken to them and they genuinely thought 'are' and 'our' meant the same thing I'd have been blissfully unaware

It's only on the last 100 or so years that we've expected the general population to be literate

You're right about that. Though we used to write letters, all essays were hand written and, degree dissertations and then documents within one's employment.

Perhaps in these digital times people can rely on spellcheckers and Grammarly, so do not need to commit the spellings & rules to memory?

I know I find myself easily forgetting things but know Google will tell me if I ever need to remember.

I did notice in the last 10 to 15 years of my working life that the standard of spelling and grammar among university educated people entering the workplace was much lower than I would have expected. I wondered if this was down to teachers and lecturers concentrating on content and disregarding spelling and grammar.

I did my second degree as a mature student. Several lecturers commented on the abundance of poor spelling and grammar.

They said that they used to have to mark the content. But now they had to mark the spelling and grammar too.

Which, for me, leads me back to the education system lacking again I guess

Which is probably related to some lack the education system.

Spelling and grammar is not a type of intelligence. If someone is not taught it then they cannot know it.

As far as I can tell we're mostly discussing the topic here, not mocking anyone.

As noted by others already though the op has started a thread aimed at guys not being able to spell but unfortunately aren't setting a good example.

I try to hold myself back, even from gentle corrections, unless I'm genuinely unable to understand the results. This is precisely because there are many very nice people out there who have difficulty spelling and I'd much rather be friends than worry about the way the letters are arranged (I think you'll find it's all the tight letters, but not necessarily in the right order).

I do have particular ones that niggle me though. "Loose" (not tight or shoot an arrow) vs "lose" (not win) is one for me.

Wiltshire and London

For somebody to misspell the name of the town where they allegedly live is rather silly. Not unrelated to this is the apparent concentration of swingers in certain small towns - South Normanton for example seems to have many more than might be expected. Maybe it does, but it seems a little odd.

I've started at the top of the thread and yes, you're right, the OP was mocking bad spelling.

Others have too. I myself was talking about why it happens, which is not mocking. I guess I ignored the short negative posts.

So to clarify, I personally would not mock someone for their spelling. And you're right, the thread does have mocking at its core

Maybe they are really decent people and have slight dyslexia?

Maybe shaming people for having learning disabilities says more about the people on threads like this than it does the people they’re trying to poke fun at ..

No absolutely you have not. You have come from a very different position and not one of mocking.

You are clearly a very decent human being and I’m not saying the others are not!!!!

Rather like shining ones shoes or picking up litter I don't see anything wrong with making effort to try to write and speak in our agreed shared syntax. If people are unable to, that's fine, if it's just that they can't be arsed.. Its a different thing. We do tend to be somewhat quick to judge on this site though.
