From the perspective of evolutionary biology, the primary function of boobs is for them to be looked at by males.
I'm not kidding.
Human females are the only species of mammal to have permanently swollen mammary glands (or boobs as we now shall call them).
Mammary glands work perfectly well as mammary glands when they are only swollen when the female is lactating.
So therefore boobs - must serve another biological function.
In most other primate species, females primarily walk on all fours and use their bottoms to attract males.
However as humans walk upright it is considerably more difficult for human females to wave their bottoms in the faces of potential mates.
As boobs kind of resemble a bottom ( and vice versa - I'm looking at you Cartman) it is beleived that sexual selection was responsible for the increased breeding success of human females who's mammary glands remained swollen for longer periods of time after lactation had ceased - and after several tens of thousands of years resulted in what we now know as boobs.
I've just taken all the magic out of it haven't I?
