Depends entirely what you're looking for.
Plastic cages are the lightest, and are pretty good for long term wear, but usually less breathable and are harder to clean. Clear or coloured, depending on what you're going for.
Metal are arguably the most attractive devices, but unless they're custom made the fit isn't always great, and because they're heavy that's not a good thing.
There are silicone options, but I wouldn't bother to be honest.
As for size, the key is to go as snug as you can without affecting blood flow. Loose will lead to chafing and is actually less comfortable. Internal locking mechanisms are also great for long term wear, as the padlock doesn't get in the way or clink against the cage. You can get plastic locks, which are numbered and awesome for ensuring the cage hasn't been taken off.
For a beginner, I'd always recommend something like a CB6000s, which is a clear plastic cage with loads of different rings and spacers to get you the best fit. They sell for just over a hundred squids if memory serves.

Personally I prefer the plastic. Metal cages were to bulky. If they have a padlock on as well you can hear the metal on metal as you walk. Plastic hides better.
I suggest the Holy trainer 4. Me and my partner went from a standard size all the way down to nub size.
I paid the knock off fake holy trainer from ebay for around £35. Came in a nice case. Didn't do any damage to my member having a knock off. Just had to file down the some of the plastic sharp edges.
Having a cage on is so additive. Part of you wants the frustration to end the other wants it to keep going. I ended up cumming once in work just from reading a naughty message my partner sent. It took me over the edge after months of not cumming. |

There's a lot of cages now with internal locking mechanisms. Take a look at House Of Denial - they do the 'knock off' versions. Similar to you though, I found the Holy Trainer knock off had super sharp edges, and the seams hurt as well. |

Yeah the sharp edges let's it down a little but I suppose a good 10 minutes with a nail file justify the discounted price.
I've spent tons on sex toys. But for me I feel like some cock cages are way to over priced for what they are. But I never bought the originals to compare maybe I'm missing out  |

We've used cock cages a lot over the past few of years, including some long periods of wear (months at a time)
We now have 2 custom metal ones. One titanium from Steelworxx and the other stainless steel from Lori. The titanium one is obviously lighter and our favourite.
I wouldn't recommend plastic ones, they are ok for day wear but don't work long term, purely because they are difficult to clean.
Also, sizing is REALLY important.;both ring size but also the internal diameter and internals length of the cage shaft itself.
