I was raised always to do this and still do. Once held a door open for a lady only to get growled at and 'I can manage myself' message. Slightly dents the confidence but I still do this. |

Not me. I like a man to be polite and to understand how various rules of etiquette make for easier, less awkward social interaction but I understand those things too.
Mr N has serious back problems it's always me carrying the bags |

Although I'm ocasionaly told that women find it demeaning and sexist or intimidating.... I just can't help it. I was raised with very traditional manners and etiquette and its hard to break the habits of a lifetime.
I will automatically hold doors, open car doors, offer a seat to a lady, or my hand if she is stepping up or down.... If a lady drops something I'll pick it up and if I see a stranger struggling I would offer to help carry bags, reach a high shelf etc.
I've often stopped to help strangers change tyres, even mended bicycle punctures on the side of the road.
That's been one of the hardest parts about covid and social distancing, and I wonder what the wold is going to look pike when all of this has finally ended? |

"I’d be just as likely to hold the door open for a man if it worked out that way."
This.
I’m unsure what the other comment about “walking on the correct side” means, though. That’s a new one on me. |

I remember an ex standing by the car door. It's ok it's got central locking says I. Yes, I know it's unlocked she replied I'm waiting on you to open it for me. And there began my training |

Ok, so that's the modern, boring, take on it. I suppose there's no point taking my cape out anymore, either? |

"It's those simple things
Opening a door
Walking on the correct side
Carrying bags (shopping) to name a few
Maybe I'm old fashioned "
I consider myself fortunate to have married a woman who can do all of those things and more for herself.
Although to be honest she can struggle with the walking on the correct side part. |

Walking on the correct side is the lady walks furthest from the kerbside,so a car hits you and not the lady. |

I find the vast majority of people regardless of gender acknowledge when you hold the door open for them. If someone said I can open a door myself - id reply Really in a sarcastic tone and well that’s wonderful news! Now just work on your manners and your good to go!! |

But there’s a difference between being spacialy aware and holding the door I’m travelling through open for anybody , which I always do, it’s just basic decency, unless I’m feeling very grumpy! vs doing it to catch eye contact and a smile for someone you want to talk to |
