Hi everyone,

I have the IUD 5 year coil and I will be having it replaced next week, to another IUD but for ten years insread. I have never had babies. Does it hurt to have the IUD replaced? My doctor said I should take a painkiller before turning up. Thanks

Hello, I guess everyone is different with pain but I had mine done for the 3rd time a couple of months ago, taking out was a doddle, reinsertion was uncomfortable for a few mins. I also took painkillers 1hr before my appointment

its like bad period pains after and maybe some bleeding.

It doesn’t hurt to have it taken out, but there will be blood, and it shouldn’t hurt to have it replaced.

having it taken out is virtually painless. Having the next one put in shouldn't be any more painful than the first time you had it done

Taking it out is the easy bit.

I nearly fainted having one put in, spent an hour laid on the couch before I could leave.

Taking it out hurt for me, but only as a thread became embedded. The new one was in before I knew it

I won't lie, yes. I had my second one out back in October and it wasn't a nice experience

However when I had my first one out it wasn't so bad. Definitely take some painkillers beforehand.
