"Version 5 quickly filled so kick off round 6. To answer the last question about kit. Wiggle, Merlin and Sigma are all good suppliers for a variety of kit. In terms of bib shorts most people shop online at the manufacturer. We can second La Passione as excellent quality and comfort. Le Col also. Also loving Attaquer and MAAP. Similarly Assos is great quality. A shout out for a more budget friendly brand in Endura. Their Pro series are great for endurance rides and for females they have the zip out seat for toilet breaks." I have been given some Le col “club” shorts to review, quite impressed.

Not cheap but they do money off via Strava challenges which makes it more affordable " I have ridden through the winter in Le Col bib tights. They are amazing and the chamois is so comfortable. It's false economy buying cheap. You generally get what you pay for and if you intend on embarking on any serious time in the saddle you'll regret not buying a decent pair.

"Sorry if this has been covered, but my shoulders ache like mad after about 15 miles. Any pro tips to help avoid this?" Quite possibly bars are the wrong width or stem is too long/short.. alternatively adopt rule no.5

"Sorry if this has been covered, but my shoulders ache like mad after about 15 miles. Any pro tips to help avoid this?" Could be stem as mentioned, to raising or dropping your handlebars using the spacers. Best advise though is a bike fit - just had one and not cheap at £150 but worth every penny now with comfort and speed I am getting. No more saddle sores and knee/Achilles pain - average has gone from 17.5mph to 19mph

"Great conditions today. A nice 74 miles in the sunshine followed by a very short run to train the legs for Lakesman in 3 weeks time." Still can’t see why you’d get off a perfectly good bike and start running.

Hopefully after a couple more years of triathlon we'll just concentrate on cycling.

Quite possibly bars are the wrong width or stem is too long/short.. alternatively adopt rule no.5 Ding ding ding I'd always say bar width for that complaint too" Bar width is one possibility but so is saddle to handlebar height. If your saddle is too high in relation to your bars you will be putting too much weight through your shoulders, as you say stem length could also be at fault.

"I am a newbie and I have a hybrid bike. A couple of questions: 1) Are they totally unsuitable for long rides? 2) All cycling group members seem to be using road bikes. I also understand that hybrid bikes cannot go as fast as road bikes. Does that mean hybrid bikes are typically not welcome in cycling groups?" The answer will depend on who you are riding with. If they are all on hybrid bikes then, no it's very suitable. However if you're riding with people on road bikes then unless you are a ridiculously strong rider you will not keep up them and work twice as hard as them. The answer to two is wrapped up in your first question. No-one will say you're not welcome. Cycling is inclusive and that includes E bikes but the reality will fall in your own comfort zone. If you are with less experienced riders on similar bikes then you won't have any problems. If you are with stronger rider's or just with similar rider's who are on road bikes then you may struggle. Ask yourself what you want, what you enjoy, where you want to be and make your own choices.

A nice 91 miles around Essex, around Stansted and over to Chelmsford before heading south again to Brentwood. Lovely route and tremendous scenery (apart from around Stansted airport)." 30km very hilly TT yesterday, 1 hour crit today …. Knackered now.

Just ask yourself if you are happy to grab reading/distance glasses of the shelf, or do you want someone who knows what they are doing and give you a checkup and the right prescription? A no brainer really. A good bike shop will give you as free or reduced fit when you buy a new bike. The days of raising and lowering the saddle are well and truly over: life's too short to be achy all over.

"Any couples for rides in the Peak, bit of a speed difference between mr and Mrs S10 but a steady 40km on road bikes, nice cafe and maybe social evening fun if you were staying in the Peak. If it became a friendship Mr S10 likes 80km rides and Mrs S10 likes a nice spa... could be a good little set up with a couple or two who also like wine & dine and soft swing." Happy to ride behind Mrs S10 all day and go at her pace, it’s the least I could do Or carry her towel and robe into the spa

" I mostly ride along the local canal network because its flat and easy and no dickhead drivers trying to run me over. I only did a 16 Mile ride last week and damn I felt it the next day, my shoulders ached but my legs felt it the most, I think it was my absolute limit in distance for now. I also need more water storage I had to ration myself towards the end. I have 2 big bottles but its not nearly enough in the summer, I was looking at a camelbak waist belt but it's only an extra 1.5 litres plus another 2 to 3 of storage and about 70 quid. Why is cycling stuff so expensive? Have a look at decathlon for that kind of stuff "

"Just getting back into cycling distance. Can anyone recommend good yoga stretches for lower back " Just ride more! My lower back always hurts when I either ride longer, faster or further than normal. Core stuff will help but basically if you ride more often and more distance it just gets easier.

Why is cycling stuff so expensive" I would say that you are drinking too much, for example I did a 50 mile ride and only drank a 750ml bottle of water this weekend. Like anything, good hydration before hand is good (but don't drink 2 litres of water just before leaving home). Like riding quicker/stronger, it takes training, so you need acclimatise your body to not need so much fluid during your ride. You don't see the pro's drinking litres of fluid all day. One of team Eneos training routines is to wake up in the morning, a cup of strong black coffee followed by a 2 hour ride (no fluid or snacks allowed)

We both use the smaller wahoo element bolt. We then use the app Ride with GPS and simply pin a ride which then automatically downloads onto the wahoo. You can play around with them and re-route or plan your own ride. We find that traveling around the country many cycling clubs have rides on Ride GPS and you can just choose one to suit where you are.

I get a lift in with my bike. Its too stressful for me to start my day. I try and get what I call a long ride in once a week after work, a tiny 11 miles. Seeing how many many of you do I've got some work to do haha. I am enjoying riding, even in the rain I will do the long ride along the canal. I need to start upping my game but need a better seat " Maybe not the seat, most saddles are designed to work with padded shorts. Keep going though, you’ll soon get used to it.

"Any other cyclist around Herts or London fancy meeting up for a cycle one weekend? We could form a Fab Cycling Club. I would be up for this! " Thank you for the interest. Anybody else? Would be nice to have a mixed M/F group

"Bit late to the party as I didn't know this topic existed. I'm an occasional biker - do about 50-70 miles per week so not much in the grand scheme of things. Local terrain dictates that I do a lot of hills... Looking for a new bike to replace my 2009 spesh tricross but no one has anything. Blooming Brexit/Covid/Suez (fill in excuse as appropriate)" Join the club. Been waiting for a new road bike for about 3 months now...

"20 days at an average of 100km a day. Best of luck! A friend of mine did it a couple of years ago" I got roped into a JOGLE v LEJOG debate when Id think of 100km as a short ride...big mistake ...the ante upped when soeone suggested a LEJOG-JOGLE return trip...they wanted to do it other way so I said that makes it uphill on the return leg...(i know i know but theybfell for it)

Do you find ti better than carbon, or just different? My current steed is alloy framed and a bit heavy at nearly 11kg, so if like something lighter. But equally I'm not getting any younger so appreciate a bit of comfort and I've heard to had more "bounce"

Absolutely no difference in speed and handling between carbon and ti though

"Thinking of setting myself a challenge to do next year, currently considering aiming to do 500km in a day. " Thats deffo a challenging target, but not impossible. Most people riding 600k events will take a short sleep stop around 370k or so. There are some folks who will ride the Rapha Festive 500 as a Full Fat in-a-onner. You might like to look at the Mersey Roads 24h TT. The winners are north of 500 miles, but 400 can be achieved by mere mortals.

Yes I used to race with someone a few years back who did over 500miles in a 24hr TT, so I know it's a challenge but not impossible. Just would need to up my long rides and the plan would be to tackle it next summer. Currently doing 40 miles twice a week at around 22mph (in a group) then a slow weekend ride. Need to work on a longer slow ride..

"Technical question - I have a Cannondale SuperSix EVO and want to set this up on my turbo trainer. It doesn’t have the old quick release skewers but through axles that you remove with a Hex/Alan key. I have a skewer for the turbo but that doesn’t fit so guessing I need some form of adapter or similar - anyone have any ideas? It’s a bog standard turbo rather than a smart trainer " That bike deserves a smart trainer

"I have been trying to figure out what the best navigation app is for cycling … having recently had some disasters with google maps Tried kamoot and that seems quite good , get from a to b avoiding busy roads but doesn’t seem to have the national cycle routes in it .., Wondered if any body had any experience of different apps .., Get an old fashioned paper OS map - they are things of beauty and wonder and allows you to see a much bigger picture. Sometimes if traveling light I photograph certain sections and read from my phone." This is so true, OS maps like the 1:25,000 scales are so iconic and look even better, when overlaid a 3d contoured surface. It's just a pity that other countries don't commission OS to do the same for them. Personally I love Google Earth (desktop), but I use Bing maps for directions and they also have a Ordenance Survey layer. This is really useful for me, as I was brought up on these paper maps at school. As for digital maps, Garmin do hand held and bike mountable maps that display OS maps too. Worth having a look at, Go Outdoors is worth a visit.

I love the smart trainer especially working long shifts and the long Scottish winter, noticed a huge difference in my fitness compared to mates I ride with. "I’ve just done 130 miles down the TPT with an overnight stop in Manchester. I even managed to include a social with a well know forum member. " TPT leg from Manchester to Sheffield is an utter bitch. I covered it in a 60 miler (in the rain) and it broke my bike twice

"Did a lap around the Mendips earlier, with a trip up Cheddar Gorge. Good news, I beat my previous time to go all the way up by over a minute! And I overtook three other riders on the way. Bad News, my time is still nearly double that of the fastest person to do it! Honestly, they must be superhuman. I might give up the cycling and stick to sex. At least my failure to finish quickly will be appreciated!" Kudos to you on both accounts.

"My road bike and Lycra has sadly been neglected again, maybe 3 rides in 2 months!? Maybe if I buy new cycling kit that'll fix everything!? I have been doing a lot of trials riding recently and the stunt shows have started up again.so plenty of random injuries occuring!" I know this feeling. So many opportunities to get out on the bike and I've done two rides in 3 months and probably less than 20 this year. Need a sportive to aim for but always seem to be busy when the good local ones come up!

" It's even worse when you know it's down to yourself, lack of motivation etc. I only properly got into road cycling 18 months ago and last year I ticked off all my mini goals, 100km ride, nonstop rides, certain routes etc. The routes here have got a bit boring, so I lost that spark. Not sure about a sportive or an event, I get to competitive so wouldn't get the best out of it

Not sure about a sportive or an event, I get to competitive so wouldn't get the best out of it" I know the feeling. The Tour of Cambridgeshire is pretty well a sellout and it's on my doorstep. It's typically 82 got miles of rolling hills and some fenland flat roads too, if you are feeling competitive, you can use it to enter the world championships if you can qualify... I only did it once and that took me 4 1/2 hours. I didn't qualify, but riding on closed roads and keeping up that speed, riding safely on the wrong side of the road, was amazing... Getting the energy levels up and having goals to aim for is harder than it looks. So, I know how hibernation can get longer and longer. Covid hasn't helped either.

I am like this right now but would suggest if you’re not already then look into joining an active club local to you. You’ll meet some great people and the motivation to go out with 10-20 people every Saturday or Sunday is a lot better. Easier than going solo too
