Thats because most aren't massage therapists. They're either self taught or been told somewhere along the line they're good.
Massage therapists can be trained at all diff levels from beauty/spa to more remedial and sports. Basic industry standards in UK set it at 3 levels.....3, 4 and 5. There is a 6 but not well recognised. Level 3 is more beauty orientated, level 4 remedial/sports and 5 allows u to work on professional athletes.
Massage has a great affect on all systems of the body but done incorrectly can also cause harm.
I hear people mention the right oils alot and using an oil because of its smell is not a good idea. Aromatherapy massage is a diff ball game and what u may consider a nice smell can actually have a profound effect on yr body so just remember smelling good doesn't nec make it the one to enhance yr mood.
I've heard on forums be4 baby oil is popular and that scares me. Im not some new age hippy but its full of chemicals. Natural oils are better but choose wisely.
Then again people that have been trained well, not all are even a fan of oils as lotion works better. I always get asked for nice oily massages but to be honest that's more fantasy and not always the best thing to use but I appreciate it depends on the purpose of the massage.
Its not the length of massage that's imp...its the quality and recognising how someone can benefit most. That skill comes with training. An hour full body just general massage is still less effective than working 1 or 2 body parts more effectively. A Thai foot massage is between 30-45 mins and I'll guarantee that person will feel like they're walking on air and putty in yr hands. Quite a small area but extremely enjoyable and beneficial.
Sensual massages.....well its touch. Touch can be used in various ways depending on what u want to achieve. I hear people say they had the worst sports massage ever it was so deep and painful. Well no massage should be painful
or leave u feeling in pain. If it does, change yr therapist they don't understand how yr body works or have not listened or watched for signals. Mild discomfort maybe but never pain. Similarly a stroke that can be deep can also be gentle and used in the right way provide much pleasure.
Therapists differ from those that have no training and do it for a hobby. They have more understanding of how the body works. There are several things I've listed above that standout that show the diff but at the end of the day "touch" is a powerful thing and we're only human. Its something we all enjoy and crave.

I guess if u've had no massage training or experience seeing a physio u might assume that. Oil is mainly used by beauty therapists that might do spa/beauty treatments but their level of skill n training is pretty basic and doesn't go into massage a great deal as its more about pampering. For remedial/sports its all about the glide and depth and what yr trying to do the area/muscle. Oil not very good for long slow deep strokes....too slippery. Again depends on the intention of the stroke. Lotion is a mix of cream/oil that doesn't leave u needing a shower after or leave an oil slick in bath. There's also massage waxes which are similar. |

I’ve massaged a fair bit and normally use a water based lubricant to massage with. It’s good if you need a condom but also better on towels and the massage table etc. A lot less messsy and easier to clean up |

I didn't realise how rare this was. I was lucky my course was both Swedish + sport's massage and additionally I've done a higher level sport's massage course, but also worked in a spa, so I tend to do 50/50 of both.

I qualified as a massage therapist about 10 years ago. I have never crossed that professional line during work hours. I have accepted offers of dates once or twice after I had respectfully declined their advances/requests during the treatment. Thats rare though, I keep my private life out of work, but my skills from work really improve my private life
Having all the right equipment, table etc makes for a far better experience
On a serious note though, there is a big problem for female therapists in the industry being inappropriately harrased in work because of men's difficulty controlling their urges (and sense of entitlement) when it's clearly not ok.
