Honestly it’s just vegetables prepared to look like meat....

I’m curious because I went to Vegan restaurant and had a basic meal and it was double the price of a traditional restaurant....

Someone please enlighten me.....

it is becoming more mainstream foodwise with the supermarkets catching up the veggie/vegan market is growing year on year so it will one day not be as expensive im trying to go vegan due to a dairy allergy im veggie now but over the year i will change over

It's probably a supply and demand thing.

The more of something you sell the cheaper you can sell it for.

Due to the amount of meat sold, a tiny profit can be taken from each product and still end up making the producers a large amount of money.

Whereas Vegan food, which has a much smaller demand, requires a larger profit per product to make enough money for the product to remain financially viable.

Then there is also less competition in the market, so less reason for them to cut their costs.

As more people start to buy Vegan foods, both of these issues will stay to be resolved and the costs 'should' drop.

It's an emerging market with a lot of new unestablished companies competing. Unlike older better known companies who have had this down for years, they have to spend much more on product development and advertising to carve out a market share.

Like the others said, in a few years it'll all be good. Just look at milk alternatives. Used to be there was only one or two that were expensive. Now there's dozens of brands and some are very cheap. I saw that even lidl and aldi are doing their own versions.

Chinese Takeaway near you

Maybe cause it was meant for livestock lol

Converting it to fancy packages for humans is expensive

The answer is quite simple. They charge what the market will bear.

Because if people have changed their diet to that, they don't have a choice but to pay whatever is asked, or go without... Vegetarian was pretty similar when that first became more mainstream

I am not sure I would agree as it does not have to be that expensive - if you by Beyond Burger for example at £5 for two burgers, yes that is pricey.

Morrisons( Just one example) sell vegemince for 1.50 or so for a bag.

It becomes (more) expensive when it is processed into burgers, sausages etc. but that is true for meat products as well.

Try eating vegetables that look like vegetables, far healthier and a fraction of the cost

Restaurants charge whatever the market will accept, it’s not like you add up the costs and add a margin , that’s capitalism, perception of value.

It boils down to economies of scale due to demand. Then of course there's a niche premium on top as there is with every other minority product.

I think it's because most of us are carnivores and vegan restaurants are just exclusive.

my ex daughter was vegan, she lived with us, we made all her food from scratch, it was cheap as chips that way, the only expensive things were stuff like soya milk etc

I'd imagine it is to do with cost of ingredients as to why you paid more. I am simply guessing here but perhaps the plant based meat substitutes cost more to process and prepare and so food establishments have to pay more for them compared to meat products and that cost is passed on to the consumer.

So I’m guessing in 10 years these vegan restaurants will lower their prices to the consumers as the price of vegan products goes down....

Try growing your own, better still

I know you can't be self sufficient, but it supplemented what I bought.

I grew some veg on a bit of unused garden. The stuff tasted better than shop bought, I ended up trading stuff with next door who grew stuff in their garden
