Awful books/films.
They justify sexual abuse and give the worst portrayal of BDSM I can think of. I don't personally know any experienced kinksters who like them.

Agreed  been in BDSM scene for 20 years give or take and 50 shades are terrible books/films and give BDSM a bad name, And the influx of people suddenly popping up on the scene clamping to be experienced DOM/subs when in reality have only seen/read 50 shades is not only annoying it becomes dangerous

Err and the Story of O is not abuse! I don't remember seeing any consent or negotiation in it. People raved about Ann Rice of The Vampire Chronicles as A.N.Roquelaure's Sleeping Beauty. I could not get past the first chapter again no consent or negotiation.
Taking 50SOG seriously is like learning spycraft from James Bond.
I honestly can't believe that "Wannabee Doms" could be bothered to read 50SOFG. I suspect they get their ideas about BDSM from any number of pornographic websites from Pascal, to the omnipresent Kink site and its spinoffs.
Possibly the hype about 50SOG has had more effect than the actual books.
If you look at the kink fiction section of Amazon there are hundreds of books with racy BDSM titles for all sexual persuasions that I am sure do not have the seal of approval of the "BDSM community". But I am sure those books are getting hearts and parts fluttering.
I know of number of subs/bottoms who have felt validated from reading 50SOG and these other books.
In comparison (back to Bond) I believe it was The Times review of "Dr No" that said this book is nothing but sex and sadism.

Simply search - Why does the BDSM community dislike 50 shades of grey so much into google and you will be shown a bunch of well wrote out articles on the subject, with the problems with it and why it’s disliked.
They go into far greater detail than I can be bothered to go into on the fab forums, better than that go and join fetlife and search for the subject 
Don’t get me wrong OP I’m not here to piss on your bonfire each to their own, however many think it is a true representation of the lifestyle and nothing could be further from the truth

To use your simile I have hunted and caught buffaloes, and will continue to do so when this pandemic is over.
