"Planning a long weekend away, but can’t decide if we should go to Chester or York. Any advice and also what to do and where to visit once there. Thank you "
Both are lovely cities but there's more to do in and around York. York is more expensive though, if that's a consideration. |

Both lovely but for us York tops it. It’s quite a compact city and ideal for wandering around. There’s plenty of historical tourist attractions if thats your thing and a wide variety of bars and places to eat.
If you want somewhere quirky try the house of trembling madness for a drink. Little Italy is a great Italian bakery and restaraunt next to York minster and Sotano is a funky little tapas bar. There isn’t a great deal of ‘high end’ dining there but some great, intimate local restaurants to enjoy. |

Yeah I'm from Chester and I like York and go every year .
Chester's best on a payday weekend Saturday if you want atmosphere but make sure you book places it expect to have long waits or refusals on Friday and Saturday nights. |

"We've been to both and would favour York. There's a Ghost bus tour, guided walks, haunted pubs, museums, lots to do."
Be careful that will give you the Willie's! |

Lived in Chester for 18 years and still over there 3 or 4 times a year (family and friends still there)
Lots of nice things to do there from sight seeing, walking around the city on the Roman walls, eating, good pubs, lovely river etc.
York is equally as good, so I think either choice would be a cracking weekend |

I'm from York originally, so I might be a bit biased, especially since I've not been to Chester & used to work in York's tourism industry
York is definitely a lovely place, and I gather it's reasonably quiet at the moment. There's plenty to do and see - even if you don't feel comfortable going inside too many places at the moment there's still a lot to do outside!
If you do decide on York, let me know if you would like any suggestions of places to go and visit |

York can be a bit of a nightmare to park and if you don’t know the one way system it can feel like you are driving back in time going through the castle walls
On the other hand if you have the tine just pootle round and go back in time through the castle walls
Some great bars and restaurants obviously like Chester busy on race days and some pubs close early
Just make sure you plan where you need to be and have a cracking time
Bettys tea rooms good but expensive however the do sell blue mountain coffee ( no not red mountain in the jars) really worth trying
I’m not far away so if you get lost or want any more info hit me up or whatever the current street parlance is |

Why drive... get the train, you can walk pretty much anywhere from the station |

If you're wanting ice creams in York I can recommend the two ice cream boats.. there's one at either end of the city centre (by Lendal Bridge and Millennium Bridge). By far the best ice creams I've ever had in York! |

Worth mentioning that Chester is busy and the bars I've worked in are booking only at busy times.
I work in one of the busiest bouncing and I must turn 250 people away on a Saturday night .
Obviously people I know somehow squeeeeze in |
