Difference between FWB and a BF/GF?

Just curious what people think is the distinction between long term FWB relationships, and being boyfriend and girlfriend. Is it just that you have no intention of pursuing marriage and having a family? Or that you have no obligations to each other? Or that you can see other people too?

It will depend on the person. I've had people question about my fwb. He stays at mine (during first few weeks of lockdown he was here but have since sent him home)
But for me the difference is definately that I have no intentions of it ever being more. I could walk away tmw. I encourage him to find a gf and will be happy for him when he does.
He has no say in what I do or when etc. I have no say in his life either. He doesnt know about any of my financial life and to be fair had illness not been an issue and this lockdown. He wouldnt have met my kids. Something I am now regretting as I struggle to explain who he is. Although as far as they are concerned he is just a friend who stopped with us for a bit. And slept on the sofa.
A bf for me would have a say in my life and I'd have to be considerate of then much more than I would be with my fwb. I mean okay he knows he is the only man since March I've been with but that wouldnt normally be the case. He is normally told this is me..like it or walk away. I also while I do care about him as he is a friend. I'm not overly emotionally attached.
I guess a bf I would be. |

Fwb is just someone you meet to fuck, no going out on dates, no going on holidays etc together just meet up couple drinks and fuck, maybe go to a sex party or swing club but thats it, text once a week
Bf/gf go out on dates, spend nights in cuddling watching movies, go for romantic meals, take home to meet the parents , go on holiday with etc |

A FWB can be a friend that you occasionally hang out with, someone who's company you enjoy. You're not romantically involved and you aren't in love with them.
BF/GF involves romance. |

Thank you for the lengthy and considered response.
I suppose they're the real keys then: no obligations, no commitments, and perhaps no emotional attachment. But then after that they're quite similar. You mentioned not sharing personal information with your FWB, but a lot of those examples many would share with friends too.
I suppose exclusivity could be another but then open relationships are common between committed couples, so I'm not sure that's a distinction. |

Is romance sex or love? Can you be romantically involved without love?
I do love semantics lol. |

Same where, most or all of those things can be done with friends. That why I called out fuck buddy - which is a clearer cut Wham Bam and that's it relationship. |

"Fwb is someone to go for a drink, meal, etc. with and have sex. Bf is relationship material."
By relationship do you mean someone to settle down with? |

A FWB for me would be someone I could hang out with, not necessarily have sex every time. A FB would be very little conversation, straight fucking, and then GTFO after it. A BF would've something I would invest time and effort in. Now finding someone who enjoys the swing side.... |
