Gentle exercise ideas

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Hi all, does anyone have any ideas for gentle exercise I could do while also getting some fresh air? My daily exercise used to be built into my commute but obviously I don't have that anymore. Everyone seems to be going for strolls but I don't like walking around aimlessly, I find it really boring. I also don't like the idea of exercising in the garden where my neighbours/other members of my household can see me

(I am really unfit and HATE working out so please don't suggest things like running/HIIT/anything strenuous. Maybe one day. But definitely, definitely not today.)

Yoga in your garden? I would love to enjoy this but I find it a bit boring, however it is very good for your joints and flexibility.

This is something I definitely wouldn't do in the garden but was thinking of giving it a go in the living room after everyone has gone to sleep. I imagine it doesn't make too much noise lol

Instead of walking aimlessly, maybe walk with purpose? Is there a road on a bit of an incline you could hoy it up at your own pace. Great to get the heart rate going.

Cycling.

Wear some headphones when out. Great to get yourself lost in music or a podcast and that can alleviate the 'boredom' of walking.

Bodyweight squats in the privacy of your own home.

Buy an audiobook- Ethical Slut and walk around aimlessly while listening. It would up your pace and won’t be boring believe me

Definitely find workout videos on YouTube. Yoga, Pilates (harder than it looks), or walk workouts (check out Leslie Sansone, she's cheesy but works, I used her videos after surgery recovery several years ago)

I walk with music. It is aimless but I don't care if I've got music. Or an audiobook or podcast

No I live in the suburbs and everything is flat. I've tried walking before and I just get bored after a few minutes and go back home.

I would absolutely love to cycle! I used to cycle all the time when I was a kid, almost every single day. Unfortunately I got into a really bad accident that resulted in me being in a cast for 6 weeks and a subsequent cycle/rollerskating ban (I used to rollerskate too) by my parents as they were scared I'd hurt myself again. Since then every time I've tried getting on a bike I've just keeled right over also I can't really afford one right now to be honest

Trust me I've tried music, I still get bored. Especially as there is nothing to look at in my area. Audio books and podcasts just annoy me, I can't stand the sound of people continuously talking in my ear

Fair enough. I normally don't dig walking as exercise but if I don't get out of my flat I go slightly spare.

That's the thing, I really don't mind sitting indoors all day haha I am such a home body. This is why I want to try and find something fun that I'll actually stick to or else I won't end up getting fresh air for the whole of lockdown

Like others have suggested jump on YouTube then, there's a myriad of options and ideas available to you on there.

And most importantly try and develop a positive mindset.

Think about all the things you can do rather than focus on what you can't.

I'm a massive homebody, but I'm finding there's a huge difference between "don't want to go out" and "not allowed to go out", so I feel like I have to escape.

I'm not opposed to YouTube at all and already follow a dance channel whose workouts I sometimes do, but only in my living room after everyone has gone to bed. I wanted ideas for outdoor exercise specifically to force myself to go out and get some air.

Walking really is the simplest option

Ah ok I hear you. But not wanting to walk, cycle or run anywhere does seem to limit your options?

You say you have to wait until everyone is in bed to do things. So, do you live with your kids? Take them out for a walk with you. Me and my 14 year old have had some lovely chats while with been out

No, I live with my parents who make me feel super self conscious and I know will make comments if I exercise in front of them. It's just not even worth trying and getting myself worked up and arguing with them/letting them destroy my confidence. It's a whole thing lol, trust me it's just easier if I do this away from them

Ah, yes, I get that. I would never of exercised in front of mine either. Seems walking is your only option, it's not that boring really, you've got it see it as your chance to go out on (hopefully) a nice day. It really helps lift your spirits

Look up Yoga with Adrienne on youtube...she has a huge array of videos with a general, physical and emotional focus. Maybe try a couple and if you like it, try and see what it is you like. Focussing on ‘it makes me feel good doing something’ rather than ‘I want to get fit’ can be more of a motivator. Draw up a tick box and stick it on the wall and tick off when you do something - a bullet journal tip for habit formation. Or get an accountability buddy...tell us how much/often you want to do something and we can cheer you on!! I definitely need accountability...I bought an online course 3 years ago and had done fuck all. I was in the associated Facebook group and a few of us were moaning about motivation...the woman who designed the course and is super lovely came on as said she’d withdraw my subscription if I didn’t start her course That got me going!!!

Rude. Clearly you are having a bad day.

OP definitely try YouTube or do you have space in your room maybe for a small exercise machine. Like the pedal ones that you can do sitting anywhere?

I like doing things that are productive that also pass time and I can do with the TV on. For example crochet, puzzles, baking, arts and crafts, computer programming, playing guitar etc. I don't tend to get bored easily and am finding it easy to fill my days at home which is why I never really think to myself that I need to go out and do something. I need something that'll get my arse actually wanting to go outside!
