Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Could be a few things but first try the following

Open your start menu and search and open command prompt.

Type in the following then hit enter after each

netsh winsock reset

netsh int tcp reset

netsh int ip reset

Restart your pc and see if it connects

Chances are your laptop just picks up an IP address from the router (dhcp), unless you have hard coded one, but you would know about that, so it's odd that you are getting that message.

Try rebooting your router.

If you have one, consider connecting using a LAN cable.

No idea how techie you are, but you can also try disabling and re-enabling the wi-fi adapter on the laptop.

In command line type

Ipconfig /release

Then type

Ipconfig /renew

Ian's finally

Ipconfig /flushdns

Your laptop is not getting an IP address. In simple terms an IP address is a unique number that gives you Internet access.

You get the IP address from your Internet provider. It is given to your laptop via your router.

From what you have said I would

Switch laptop and router off. Put router back and wait 5 minutes. the put laptop back on.

If that doesn't fix things

Check you wireless dongle is installed ok and working on the laptop.

Check all the relevant lights are on in your router.

If you are on virgin media cable internet check with them that there are no outages/problems in the area.
