Need some words of whisdom/advice on how to stop.

I have tried twice and tend to give in after a day or two.

Im a single mum and have a stressy job so tend to have one when im stressing and just need to have 5 min, that was how it started anyway!

Is it easier to just go cold turkey and try my best to push past that 24/36 hour bit where i give in?

Do vapes help? I dont really want to get addicted to using one of those tho.

I know you can buy patches and gums? Have people had any good experience with using them?

Taar in advance!

I cut out 1 fag a day every week and replaced it with a vape. Got down to 3 a day and didn't see the point. Now I just vape but reducing the nicotine strength to get off that too

I (mr) quit on a vape over a period of a year.

Started on strongest nicotine and reduced it but by bit over months until I was on zero.

Became less dependent on the vape machine has mail one day I suddenly realised I went the whole day without vaping and never touched it again - that was two years ago now.

The biggest tip I can give about vaping is seek advice from a reputable supplier/shop who will help you purchase the right machine for you.

I think too many people go out and simply buy one and don’t take to it, and that’s mainly because it’s the wrong machine.

This isn’t a facetious question. Do you actually want to quit?

I know i should, and have many times, but the problem is I enjoy smoking so i find it difficult to summon/maintain the will power to give up, keeping myself busy tends to lessen the amount i smoke

I went to chemist and got tablets called champix. Dont know whether its mind over matter but they really helped. Been off cigs 9 months. Had a few setbacks when I've had a drink but on the whole I'm now a non smoker

ok so . I'm a none drinking alcoholic and an ex smoker as well as other drugs . I'm now clean 12 years off the alcohol and 5 off the fags . No patches and no support from anyone . I did it all by just stopping. I did a day and its fucking hard . So I said to myself everytime I wanted a fag or a drink . " I'm never going to go thought that again, I'm not giving in to the little devil in my head telling me to have a fag or drink . Everyday you dont have a fag is one more step to never have another one . Tell yourself it can only be a good thing not to have one and no good will ever come from having a fag . Nothing. Do it , be good to yourself. Live without the need of an addiction.

Hope this helps and I'm here help anyone that may want help . X

I have been using a vape since 2016, itvwas hard transitioning but worth it in long run, I’m not saying it’s healthy but it is 99.99999999999% safer than cigarettes. I feel healthier to.

Patches worked for me long time ago but I enjoyed smoking.

Good luck OP with whatever you decide.

I've quit and failed multiple times.

On one occasion though I thought I'll get to the end of this month and try to quit again. Half way through the month I woke up in the morning, had my coffee and usual routine would have been the cigarette after but I felt like I didn't really want that cigarette. So I didn't have it then and not had one for 10 years now.

Not sure how to explain it but I'm thinking it has to be that will and power in your head first. Not the understanding that you have to for some reason but the actual - you don't need/want it anymore.

I found going cold turkey was the only way for me. Started going to the gym and not putting myself in situations where I would normally smoke, like I stopped going out for a few weeks. It is hard, but once you get to the 2-3 week period, it's smooth sailing !

I hope you find the strength to quit cold turkey, as I fully regret switching to vaping. I'd say I'm more addicted to that than I ever was to cigarettes

Think about why you have failed to quit in the past and plan to avoid those situations.

Choose when to stop for maximum chance of stopping ie putting yourself in a situation where not smoking is enforced or the norm.

Prepare, perhaps ramping down your consumption towards quit day, clearing all signs of smoking from your life, telling friends and asking them to not tempt you but support you.

If you smoke in response to perceived stress then make sure to avoid the chance of being stressed during the first 72 hours by which time the toxins in cigarettes will be pretty much out of your body.

Should you fall of the wagon do not despair just learn from why you did and carry on being an ex smoker.

never smoked. never wanted too.

but I do understand how hard it can be for people to quit.

I always see on them ads for nicotine patches 'willpower required' so I must be difficult.

some have said that you can quit but if you ever just smoke 1, even years later you could be hooked again.

good luck to those trying to stop

Dear OP. I’ve got 2 jobs( morning and night, all togheter 13 hours 5-6 days a week) and it us stresfull like hell and i was smoking everytime When i was angry, stressed etc. Now is almost one year from When i quit after 30 years smoking day by day. So after all this experience i have to Tell you only one thing- drop them, forget about them , hate them , think that with every cigarette smoked is one week less of living. You are the only one who can help you and electronic or other wapes shouldn’t replace them.

Now i fell better and Im happy and proud that i could quit.

Good thinking.

I use the demotivator website which calculates the cost of things before you buy. Really gets you thinking about what you can live without

Just keep trying to quit. Eventually you will be more in the habit of not smoking than smoking.

I allow myself to smoke whenever i want, but i remind myself i only want to smoke and am not addicted as it does nothing for me, i getno wihdrawal symptoms except for wanting to smoke and missing smoking, smoking and is just a habit and deying yourself something comforting is always hard.

You also might have some triggers to smoking. For me it just used to be stress at work. End of the day I just had to get it. I've found better coping methods now.

If you're quitting smoking I heard coffee and red meat are also common triggers. Just the taste and feeling they leave on your mouth can make you crave cigarettes. Beyond that, try asking the NHS, don't know what help they have but they always have a poster in a pharmacist saying how they can help wean you off
