I think painful is a preconception alot have about anal.
Think of it more as an experience you have never had before.

Also important is to relax. Experiment with different positions as you will find it easier to relax in some positions.

Its all about getting in the mood and relaxation. If you're tense an anxious about it will be uncomfortable because you're not relaxed. Maybe try on your own with lube and finger to see how it feels.
