I use the app Hotel Tonight to find a last minute room in an area - typically they're in nicer / boutique hotels, and less chains. I use it a lot with work, but have done with a couple meets / dates. Can still be a little higher than the budget end of a spectrum, but you often get a really nice room - something that makes you want to stay in the place for longer than your carnal needs!
