Has any one had or is considering having the HPV vaccine upon entering the swinging lifestyle? I know hpv is very common and mainly clears on its own but for peace of mind it might be worth it. |

I got mine privately.
My understanding is that it's less effective but still worthwhile. |

The majority of sexually active people have already been exposed to the HPV virus so having the vaccine would be a bit pointless. That's why it's offered to young girls (hopefully) while they are still virgins. I don't think boys are routinely vaccinated yet. |

You can get the vaccine privately up to age 45. I have previously been very monogamous and never had an abnormal screen or anything like that - first year of dipping my toe in swinging with 2 threesomes with my parnter and 2 seperate guys, friends, trusted, full condom use etc, I was diagnosed with a high risk HPV but no abnormal cells - like the stats say it was gone a year later so my body dealt with it by itself -however it shook me up.
I had a high risk HPV but not type 16 or 18 which are the worst type. So yes I know I have had HPV before and my body cleared it but I may not have been exposed to the more aggressive 16/18 as yet and I would like to avoid it as there is also some indication in the research that the more different types of HPV you are infected with the more likely you are to develop cervical cancer. Also having multiple partners is a definite risk factor for HPV and cervical cancer. Yes we have smears and effective treatment but the treatment itself can cause problems and after looking into it is not something I wish to put myself at risk of going through along with the stress and worry. I am just wondering how many other people have looked into this and decided the vaccine was worth getting and experiences of it. |

Yes HPV will be given to boys aged 12 to 13 at school from 2019/20 - message focuses on cancer but we all know there's a sexual health dimension too. It's about time!
MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) up to age the age of 45 can get HPV from GUM/Sexual Health clinics. |

Thats really interesting and good news that MSM can get the vaccine free. Would be good if they could extend that availability to other people who identify as being in an at risk group such as the delibrately non-monogamous or sex workers. |

I was diagnosed with abnormal cells aged 18/19 and successfully treated with laser after having only had 2 sexual partners (one of whom had obviously been a carrier of hpv). Fifteen years later I had a third of my cervix removed to treat grade 1a1 cervical cancer.
All it takes is sex with a carrier, who may in fact be your sole partner. The sooner that they start to vaccinate boys as well as girls the better! |

Sorry to hear you had to go through that :0( And I agree boys need to be vaxed as well - it has been linked to oral and penile cancers so its not just for us ladies that they need it - If you dont mind me asking, was the 15 years later treatment due to a recurrance of the earlier HPV or a new infection do you know? - just ignore if its too personal a question x |

I honestly don’t know, at that point I was still living a monogamous lifestyle, had been with my ex husband for 5 years and had only had 6 sexual partners. After my experience in my late teens I developed a phobia of smear tests. My cancer was only detected when my ex husband and I went to our gp to seek fertility treatment. After an internal examination by my gp she told me she would not refer us until I had a smear done, I suspect she had seen/felt something there. I had to be sedated for her to do the smear test and then again to have the colposcopy and treatment at the hospital.
Hpv has had a profound effect on my life, even now I have my phobia and have to have a mild sedative for smear tests. Anything that can be done to prevent other people going through this is a wonderful thing |

Thank you for sharing that and being so honest! I guess if you were both monogamous with each other it must have been a recurrance. I have always been health focused but since getting the HPV diagnosis a few years ago I am even more careful now to keep as healthy as pos as it is more likely to re-occur when your immune system is low or compromised in some way. x |

I think everyone now gets if before a certain age. Im not sure there's an option to get it after you've been sexually active. I never had one and ended up with precancerous cells that had to be removed twice and lots of biopsies taken. Had there been this option of to have a vaccination when I was younger I would have certainly accepted it willingly. |

I've spoke about it during my last visit to the sexual health clinic. The advisable age is up to 45. I'm 39 in a couple of weeks so asked if it's worth having it. The advice was yes. Although I'm sexually active and subsequently more than than likely have already been exposed to a number of HPV strains it's still worth protecting from cancer.
NHS don't do it at this age for women so have to get it privately. Boots (hope won't get a timeout for mentioning it) do it privately at £150 a shot. You need 3 shots for a full course over several months. I'm still undesided about it.

They weren't suggesting it of their own accord. As I've heard about the HPV vaccine I've asked for more details about it during the visit.

I had it plus you can get one for Hepatitis A which I did not know about, only knew about Hepatitis B. Apparently A can spread too sexually. So please get them all folks if you sexually active  |

That’s interesting, as I was told last year - during a check up at the clinic - that the ideal age was up to 25, but it was pointless giving it after 30 because of the amount of exposure people have had to it by then!

Yeah, Hep B is 3 shots a month appart and then another one a year after you've got the first one.
As for HPV vaccine that's what I've asked the nurse if it's still worth having it at nearly 40. She said yes.
I'm going to book an appointment. We have some friends who had various cancers (some of those friends no longer with us). If that vaccine can prevent a couple of cancers I'm going for it.
Especially as I get screened every 5 years. It's a long time for something to develop and not to be known about till it's too late (not preaching, personal choice).

Just in case you're wondering why MSM not all men at present. Of course the vaccinating of boys from now on will hopefully considerably reduce these cancers and genital warts.
Why is the vaccine only offered to the MSM population that attends level 3

HPV related disease compared to heterosexual men, and MSM attend sexual health services/ GUM and HIV clinics are known to be a high-risk group within the MSM population in terms of risk behaviour and STI transmission. |

The body doesn’t always clear it up, hpv is proven to be the cause of most cervical cancers. Is it better to spend a few pence by vaccinating and prevent cancer or spend thousands of pounds treating it? |

Oh and hpv doesn’t only cause cervical cancer, it causes mouth and throat cancers too. Do a forum search for Stella’s battle with throat cancer. You will soon see why vaccination is so important |

We were monogamous and had limited partners before starting in the LS so the HPV vaccine was a natural fit for us. Gardasil 9 is the one we had, it is possible for anyone under 45 to get it, and you can ask at most pharmacies for it. It is a bit pricey but any cost is less than the price of some of the nasties it prevents, and it is divided into 3 jabs at day 1, 2 months and 6 months.
The process was simple, just an online form for our local pharmacy which then got approved by a doctor remotely and was then paid online. No probing questions about our personal lives. Once that was approved we set a date to pop in to the pharmacy where they took us into the consultation room together and gave us the injection again with no questions about our personal lives. All very clean, easy, fast and professional.
We have a vanilla friend who had a bad outcome from HPV and since it is one of the two common things you can still catch even if you use condoms, we went for the vaccine as soon as we could. |
