The Southwest excepted, northerners in general are much more friendly, open and upfront with strangers than southerners in general which lends itself very well to swinging?
A lot of southerners have that awkwardness ingrained in them when with people they don't know. It's not considered normal to talk to strangers, sometimes to even have eye contact in my experience.
Plus it's a hell of a lot easier to get to places too.
If you had 5 compatible couples who could possibly form a great circle of friends who swung with the others and they were based in York, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Hull AND a similar 5 couples based in Canary Wharf, Milton Keynes, Reading, Tunbridge Wells and Brighton I know which group I'd overwhelmingly put my money on actually finding each other, meeting up and becoming firm friends?
There also seem to be areas that are much more prone to swinging than others. The size of a population nearby has a lot to do with it, but also the proportionate representation of said population that actively do swing.
West Yorkshire and the Lancs region spreading out from Manchester are two, the large West Midlands connurbation is another?
