I am considering hormone therapy to permanently change my body, grow breasts and hips!

But I’m nearly 57 should I bother

It's never too late! Cher is still changing her body and she's 117

If it makes you happy, I don't think your age matters!

It is quite likely that the effects of cross sex HRT will be less noticeable that on a much younger person.

It may be best to consult with an endocrinologist before starting on a course of HRT.

HRT can have the effect of re distributing fat around the body, making skin smoother, making body hair finer. Breast growth is a likely result but this is variable from person to person. Fat may be redistributed to the hips but it should be noted that bone structure will not be affected at all beyond early years development. Adult facial hair is also not going to be affected by HRT as it is terminal hair which has been androgenised during puberty,HRT cannot reverse that process.

HRT is long term therapy and the effects will not be sped up by increasing dosages,in fact the effects can be slowed or even stopped by excessive dosages.

There can be many unpleasant or even dangerous side effects from long term HRT,so I repeat,it is probably wise to consult with an endocrinologist before starting.

It is highly unlikely that an endocrinologist would prescribe HRT for cross sex purposes without a second opinion, usually from a psychiatrist.

There are long waiting lists for this service from the NHS and private practitioners in this field are few and far between, usually charging in the region of £200 per consultation.

Age is not a problem, i have known girls going for medical transition in their 70's. However it is not a simple thing and not a decision to be taken lightly. As some of the above posts have said, getting it wrong can have very serious health implications.

Do you have contact with a local trans support group, where you can talk to girls who have done / are doing this? Who can give you advice on gender id clinics, waiting lists etc. Are you considering eventual full surgery or just hormone treatment? This can make a difference to what treatment you might need.

I'm not an expert on this, having decided that it's not for me (or at least not for me at the moment, in the future who knows?) but i have been around plenty of girls that have transitioned.

Whatever you choose, good luck and i wish you well. Polly xx
