In real terms, it's no more dangerous than crossing the road without looking.

Do a google search for STI infection rates for statistics. Arm yourself with as much knowledge to allow you to make an informed choice.

The best bet, while unrealistic, is to have your chosen friend tested, ask them to abstain for the next 3 months, and re-test. I find locking them in the basement a good way of ensuring abstinence.

Unprotected oral risk is a bit like cooking.... if it smells off, it probably is

I don't have statistics for you but I believe that's how most couples play. Unprotected for oral and own partner, but condom for penetrative sex with others.

I think your right but if the risks are the same for both why are we not either completely safe or not

I’m not sure if we are doing right or wrong hence the question

There is no right or wrong from anyone else's perspective. It's down to how you, and that of your playmate, are comfortable with whatever risks you take.

I understand that the risks of contracting a STI from oral sex are lower than via unprotected vaginal or anal. However protected penetration isn't 100% safe, certain infections can be transmitted from skin to skin contact and via fingers, toys etc. If a guy with an infection ejaculates on your face and it goes in your eye you're at risk.

In short it's all risky, some activities more so than others. All you can do is weigh up which risks you're prepared to take and go from there.

Unprotected oral is less risky. You can find comparisons online.

We think there is too much vilification on here! Do what you want when you are in reciept of the risks.

There are plenty of papers published in the academic press regarding the statistics of STI transmission, both with and without condom use.

In theory therefore we should be able to predict the chances of infection, except for one huge gap in our knowledge.

That is that we don't know if our partner has an infection or not, nor even know what the chances are for that demographic. The chances vary by age, sex, location and lifestyle.

Tricky, eh?

I guess looking at it from a different perspective, would you really be bothered to give/receive oral with dental dam or condom? I bet there's zero sensation and not worth the effort for either party!

When I went for my last STI check I was told by the nurse that penetrative sex is safer that oral sex. There is a risk of blood born viruses being transmitted if there is a cut in the mouth. There is a risk of the transmission of oral chlamydia or gonorrhoea from giving a deep blowjob. However the penis has to touch the back of the throat for transmission. She said did also say the the incidence of oral chlamydia or gonorrhoea is practically negligible amongst straight men, and that theirpikicy was to only do mouth swan on bisexual men or women who have slept with bisexual men. She said there was no risk of oral chlamydia/gonorrhoea from licking pussy because a pussy can’t get to the back of the throat. If a man catches chlamydia or gonorrhoea from someone sucking his cock he can then pass that on vaginally.

In your bed

From the British association for sexual health.

The risk of catching each infection is different, and also varies according to the type of sex you are having (such as oral, vaginal or anal sex).

For example:

- Herpes is often passed on through oral sex, but HIV is rarely passed on this way.

- Anal sex carries the highest risk of passing on infections such as HIV and hepatitis, followed by vaginal and then oral sex.

- Non-penetrative sex (such as body rubbing and mutual masturbation) carries the lowest risk, but some infections (such as warts and herpes) can be passed on in this way.

For most infections (except herpes), the risk of catching an infection is greater for the oral partner (the one giving oral sex).

Most people do not use protection (condoms or dental dams) for oral sex.

The risk of catching an STI through unprotected oral sex is lower than for unprotected vaginal or anal sex, but is not zero.

If it's numbers you are after then there is not enough space here to publish is all.

Each disease has too many variables.

This article explains HIV risks but there are so many variables that most will probably not read it all.

Clacton on sea, Essex

The biggest problem STD with unprotected oral is Herpes as all others can be treated with a course of tablets, we're fully tested every 28 days including throat swaps but this doesn't make us bomb proof.

After 20 years & 100's of naughty encounters we have never caught an STD as we way up the people we meet, it's always condoms when swinging because a large percentage of swingers hardly ever get tested but we have always done unprotected oral without any hiccups.

We do bareback usually with other adult industry folk who lie us are regularly tested & have monthly certs going back at least 3 months, there are some of our swinging friends who do get tested like us & again only have protected sex with none tested people & we are happy to have bareback with as we know & trust them.

Anyone can catch an STD so it's usually about assessing the situation & working out the risks, red meat is bad for you but how many of us eat Steak.

The elements at the end of the fact sheet are useful to, increased risk due to viral loads, which no one can ever know.

But also the stats for reducing risk via prep and condoms.
