Is there away to prevent everyone over my prefered age range from seeing my profile and so preventing them from contacting me

Yes. Go to account. Privacy and then age range and block them

You can't block people from seeing your profile, only stop them from contacting you. You'd have to block the individual to stop them looking at you.
