your postcode covers a wide area, he could've guessed lucky.

or he found you using who is near and is in the same postcode?

location trackers have to be in your device for you to be trackable, he's talking out of his ass.

Have you sent any photos?

Photos taken on a camera are likely to have GPS coords embedded

Or maybe he was just nearby and found you on "see who's near"... When I'm at work i frequently see people listed as" within quarter of a mile "

The location can be pretty good on here. I had one at a station where it listed "within touching distance", also seen "2 minute walk". If I knew that postcode then I could give it. Maybe he was in your street for an unrelated reason and saw that distance? I'd only be really worried if they gave your house number.

Here is some IP address info

What Is My IP

Menu

Home » Learn » Online Privacy » IP Details Revealed

Can You Be Tracked Down Just by Your IP Address?

It's probably the number one concern most of us have about our IP address: Can somebody track me down just by knowing my IP address? After all, the IP address that first pops up whenever you go to "WhatIsMyIPAddress.com" is actually linked directly to the computer you're using.

With privacy and spying so much in the news, it's no wonder so many of us are asking that question.

So what is the answer? It varies, depending on a lot of circumstances, but in general, the answer to the big question is...probably not.

In other words, the most information that the average curious person can find out about you with only your IP address (and nothing else) is what region, city and town you are in when you're on the Internet. They won't know anything about you (such as your name, etc.) or the computer you're using.

And actually, what they'll find out isn't really about YOU, more than it is about your online connection. That is, it doesn't know WHO is using a certain IP address—they can only find out, in general, where that computer is.

Go to our Home Page right now and you'll see what your IP address says about your location, in real time (meaning "right now").

If you're in your home or apartment, it might show a location several miles away, or even 25 miles away.

But if you're in a coffee shop or airport, it won't show your home address—it will show the general area of your location. And again, these "geo-locaters" can only guess at where you are while you're linked to some network that is linked to the Internet.

But can you be tracked?

However, if an online computer user were doing something illegal (according to the laws in place), an agency might seek legal permission to contact the Internet Service Provider for information. With a subpoena in hand, they could ask the ISP to provide the online account holder's name and address. (Again, that would identify the person who pays the Internet service monthly bill, but not every individual who might have access to that account.)

But for 99% of us, that's an extreme case.

Staying safe online.

You have to admit one thing, though—it is a little unnerving to realize that someone who has your IP address (or captured it at one time) has a pretty good idea of the region or city you live in. It can feel somewhat intrusive.

But keep in mind that it's not as if our names and addresses are listed in some public Internet phone book that's handed out.

In fact, the Internet is very anonymous in many ways. Most of the time, you give away your identity by establishing relationships, business and personal, online.

So, if you don't want someone zeroing in on your IP address, make it a habit not to be so quick to give up your name and address online, especially to people or companies you don't know very well.

Most people on the Internet are fair and honest, but there are plenty of others who aren't. Be smart online, just the way you are (we hope) in everyday life. Don't trust anybody with personal information until you know them well enough to trust them.

See your IP address information.

Try using this tool to look up any IP address.

"I've been sat on the same sofa as my sister and fab said she was a quarter of a mile away so i'm pretty sure that's as close as it gets "

There were three of us in a car and we all went on Fabs and first of all it came up as just the three of us as each others closest person. Then suddenly someone appeared closer to two of us than the other people and they definitely weren't in the car.

I think he is winding you up. It might be possible to find the approx area that you are in by triangulating your location against his, if he moves around and does the 'who's near you'. However, this is tantamount to stalking, maybe report him?

If you are using the location feature on your phone, then it can work in a couple of ways.

It can use the GPS on your phone. So if you are outdoors and see someone is "within touching distance" then chances are they are using GPS too and very near. (depending on fab's refresh rate)

If you are not using GPS or are indoors and on a mobile network then it will use the location of the cell tower that you are connected to as a central point. That's when you tend to see "within a quarter mile". And why two people sat in a car for example would only see that, because it can't be any more accurate.

If you are using WiFi at home or a hotel then you may see "within touching distance" also, as you will be registered at the same hub. Had that at a hotel once.

Apologies to anyone who knows better than that, my telecomms experience is a few years out of date now!

Its impossible without the phones IME number located at the back where the battery is.. or at least a full phone number and even with that info triangulation is only as good as positioning of Services towers and accurate to about 50-100m at best, so in otherwords hes bluffing

There's no way of getting IP address from a communication through the site, AND all the details are removed from photo's on the site, so there is no info available there either... the photo's that you can view are actually changed after you upload them, when the "fab-swingers" logo is added to the image... this would over-write any tags regardless.

Also, knowing someone's IP address wouldn't give someone your home address either. Your IP address can even change quite often, if you're the sort who turns their router off when not using it.

Its possible, but far from easy. It's worth a punt to say thats he's bullshitting you. Even if he had your IP address, that will in all likelihood show the location of the telephone exchange assuming your connected using a broadband connection. If you're using 3g/4g and mobile then your IP address is contingent on your location.

Normally it would be a combination of sources that would be used to identify someone. The exif info embedded in a photo, maybe using the same user name or photograph on different sites. Maybe a mobile number being cross referenced on a social media site.

But locating your post code in real time, that some GCHQ or 4chan level of stalking.

If he is making you feel uncomfortable with what he is saying to you, report and block him. If you are meeting up with him and he is saying he knows where you live despite you not telling him directly, then he is either stalking you or trying to frighten you. Don't meet him again and if he persists, report him to the police and I would also tell him what I was intending to do.
