Having coil due to heavy periods

Jump to: Newest in thread

I'm thinking of having the coil fitted as I have heavy periods and quite painful. I've been told the coil will stop my periods is this true? And is it painful to have it fitted x

It took ages for my periods to settle down, but yes they stopped. However it didn't suit me as I kept having spotting, gained weight and terrible moods.

It's uncomfortable having it fitted, rather than hurting. Nothing that painkillers won't ease.

Only way you'll know is if you try it. Good luck

Depends on coil. Mine is copper and only adds to the monthly misery.

The hormone one sounds great if it does. I can't have it as I get monthly migraines.

Good luck with it all. They have been great in my experience. No issues and I've been using them for 12+ years now

I've got the mirena coil and it's been brilliant. No problems at all and very rarely a tiny little bleed but nothing more than a day.

The copper coil makes your periods heavier, the mirena (hormonal) coil makes them lighter.

I had a mirena fitted a year ago. It was uncomfortable but not too painful when fitted. I did take painkillers about half an hour beforehand just in case.

There is a bit of a myth around that you can't have a coil fitted if you haven't had children. I haven't and it was fine.

I had some spotting for a couple of hours after it was fitted and some cramps, no worse than period pains.

My first period after was heavy and lasted about 3 weeks, i also had spotting for a few months. In all it took 7-8 months to settle down properly.

I am not one of the lucky ladies for whom it stops your periods completely. Before i had the coil my periods were very heavy and lasted a week, now they are very light and last 3-4 days.

The only issue i have is weight gain. I have put on 2 stone since having it fitted although eating crap and being idle probably has something to do with that too!

I had a mirena coil for years. The only difference it made to me was it stopped my periods.

It doesn't suit everyone but if it does I recommend it.

I had the mirena coil fitted last week. I had it for same reasons, heavy periods and they are happening every 3 weeks so I want them gone.

It's uncomfortable, slightly more so than having a smear and you'll get period like cramps straight away. Nothing bog standard pain killers didn't help with.

I've noticed today I'm having some lower pelvis, and lower back cramping along with some light spotting. From what I've been reading it takes around 3 months fir things to settle down.

Haven't noticed any mood swings, weight gain or any other side effect yet.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I've been using Mirena for over 10 years. My periods have never stopped, although apart from a few spectacular ones they are usually light. You can easily have it removed if it doesn't suit.

I had it fitted 5 weeks ago.

I didn't have periods anyway so dunno about that bit.

However.. having it put in was sooo painful. It was like 3 or 4 contractions when giving birth. I was also bed bound in pain for 12 hours after. After that it's been fine. Maybe twice a week I have a little niggle of a pain in the morning but nothing to complain about.

"

It actually depends on two things:

1. How large your body is (presumably your cervix size and uterus).

2. If your local NHS trust will fund the smaller coil.

Essex NHS trust used to fund the smaller coil for women who had not had babies and were small bodied. Oxfordshire doesn't (or didn't, last time I went). I could get it privately where I live now, but not on the NHS.

We don't have it fitted for you though, we do it for our own health and wellbeing.

My periods were so heavy i was severely anaemic. I would rather never have sex with anyone than suffer the way i was before i had it fitted.

Best thing I ever did. It's uncomfortable when it's done but nothing painkillers & a hot water bottle won't sort out.

The mirena coil lasts 5 years & no periods. Other than a little spotting when it was fitted, I've not had a period in 8 years & I wish I'd done it sooner. Never had any side effects either. I'm 43 this year & I'll be replacing it in 2 years - apparently it's good for keeping the change at bay too & I can have it until my late 50's

Copper coil makes no difference to periods so go for the mirena

I still bleed with the mirena coil but it is greatly reduced. They are more uncomfortable coming out than going in. Painkillers help. It also depends whether you've had kids or not as well as to how uncomfortable it is.

It can be felt by the guy if your strings are too long. They soften over time or you can get them snipped shorter. My poor hubby was on the receiving end of this and it isn't pleasant!

A world of my own

I have the Mirina. Was no worse than going for a smear to have it fitted. Some cramping for a day or two after. The first 6months I had spotting but not a period. Ive never had a period on it.

I have gained a little weight but that could just be coincidental as my dad died shortly after I had it and my life's been very stressful for the last couple of years.

Its worked for me and I'm due to get it replaced soon. I'd be interested to know how that went for others. I'm worried I'll go back to spotting again for months!

Yes I had a period of sporadic bleeding after for a few months. But it's worth it for me.

I had the mirena fitted two weeks ago for exactly this. So far I've bled every day and had stomach cramps, I'm really hoping it settles!! I was supposed to be having an endometrial abalation but it was decided that due a variety of factors that it wouldn't be suitable. I'm giving this six months to settle down and if it doesn't I'll be having everything out!

Had a mirena coil fitted to help very heavy periods - severely anaemic and at heaviest could only go and hour between changes

Took 6 months to settle down and I had breakthrough bleeding and spotting constantly - almost had it removed but it did eventually settle

Hasn't completely stopped my periods but I barely notice the spotting and it lasts 4/5 days

Has been brilliant overall and I am glad I persevered

I'm hoping for an endometrial ablation, because my periods have got longer and heavier since I came off the pill due to having a sterilization.

I'd love everything out... but they won't go for that...

My mum had everything out at the same age that I am now and they found cancer, plus being overweight, my risk is quite high. I had a hysteroscopy instead, which was ouchie. I'm just waiting for results on that too.

If it all works, i will be a happy bunny! I'm sick on carrying loads of stuff around each month, not being able to go out and having to take days off sick because of heavy bleeding.

There's a Facebook page for those that have had problems with the mirena.

Read about it and make your own mind up. It does affect women differently. I'm on my second but it gives me peace of mind and possibly helping with menopause. I'll be 49 next month and so far not been too bad. Trying to lose weight isn't easy.

I have done but although it helped initially I ended up bleeding for 10/15 days.

I didn't want a coil so the alternative given to me was a pill that stopped my periods called Cerazette. But I was a few years older than you. Worth asking if you are unsure with the coil.

Good luck though x

My Own Little World

It is a Mirena coil for heavy periods.

That is why I had it fitted and also the reason I had it removed. Hated it.

Do your research before hand, not just with medical and the manufacturers website but with support groups. Find out the pros and cons before hand, I wish I had, would have saved me years of medical complications.

I've been against it for ages but after having to explain to four people at work, why I needed to go home to change and try and discreetly clean up where I had been sitting, I thought that it couldn't make it any worse. So everything crossed that it helps!

I had a hysteroscopy done with just painkillers and the coil fitted, so think a coil on its own would have been ok.

They couldn't find the strings on mine (this was a known issue from early days) so there was quite a lot of delving around ...but even that wasn't that uncomfortable considering. For a normal removal it won't be anywhere near as bad as you'll big it up to be before hand! Don't worry about it..... And try to relax. X

Nurse here.

Both coil fittings are similar to Smear procedure. Take some painkillers before hand.

You may notice spotting and irregular bleeding up to 6 months post insertion.

Side effects of mirena are weight gain, mood swings, acne and headaches. With copper, weight gain, back ache and altered tastes.

Each womans story will be different and only you can choose the right contraceptive. The implant has the highest success rate.

Expiry on licence of mirena is now three years not five.

Personally, I hated the mirena, I was suicidal, moods intolerable and weight gain. Within an hour of it being removed I felt better. There are law suits against the manufacturers in the US, and are attempting here.

Read up, be wise, and be willing to trial options.
