It is highly contagious, why wouldn't you tell sexual partners. They must have told you do and dont's.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

technically cold sores are herpes, and unfortunately can be passed to genitals. Once you have them, that's it, although they can be controlled. It's a little known fact that the majority of the population carry the herpes virus, but not as many actually show symptoms.

If you are between outbreaks you are not infectious, but it is entirely up to you whether you let people know. A regular partner might need more information than a one off.

Sorry you are having to deal with this. A close friend of mine has been suffering with this for years and he finds it quite hard to deal with

I won't allow people in clubs to go down on me for this reason, who knows if they have a cold sore on the loose that I can't see

It's far too easy to pass this on so you definitely shouldn't play at all when it's active

Take care

nope barnstaple clinic did not offer any advise on how to deal with it or how to move forward which is a bit worrying

No doubt you've been to the GUM clinic. I should seek expert advice as to way forward. I imagine it's very unpleasant and you probably need some counselling but it's not end of world. Make sure you get all tests done as there might be some underlying reason why you are a bit run down which with the right treatment will return things to normal.

Good luck.

It's incredibly common and is quoted as being found in 70-90% of the population. Loads of easy info online, just google.

Seek help, taking zinc tablets helps to stop herpes simplex (cold sores) from reaching their contagious worst. But oral sex and kissing is still a no go, for safety's sake.

Be healthy and wise, friend.

A good diet exercise plenty of good sleep and try and relax.

Herpes usually flares when your immune system is low and can be brought on by stress too.

Some people may only have one flair up in a lifetime, some people 2 or 3 or some people have them frequently.

Theres no cure apart from try and strengthen your immune system with plenty of sleep relaxation and good diet etc.

Good luck OP i can imagine its not pleasant.

As someone who gets cold sores, and nasty ones, I feel for you. It must be even worse having to deal with genital herpes.

Life isn't designed so we can get the right amount of sleep, relaxation, vitamins etc etc. If it were, we'd all be healthy and happy all the time. You can't avoid stress.

Strong sunlight can bring on an attack of cold sores, as well as being run down, but you may want to check if that also applies to genital herpes.

The best you can do is research as much as possible about the condition - knowledge is power and puts you in control; identify your symptoms when you're about to suffer an outbreak and not meet when you're infectious.

Take the amino acid l-lysine which is very effective in helping prevent herpes flare-ups or reducing their severity. Avoid supplements containing arginine (very common in body-building supplements) which can trigger outbreaks. Avoid sex during an outbreak. Follow a healthy diet and manage your stress levels and you will minimise the risk of outbreaks.

Honestly OP, I don't believe its possible to just develop herpes genitally, you must have caught it from someone else who either had it genitally or gave you oral when they had a cold sore. It's highly contagious.

It also depends on which type it is. If you get type 1 (typically oral herpes) on your genitals then you're less likely to ever get a recurrence. If its type 2 (typically genital herpes) then recurrences are more likely and you can actually shed the virus even when you're not showing symptoms. You can also shed with type 1 but it's less likely. Anybody with cold sores, it's likely to be type 1, as type 2 very rarely appears on the mouth, and is less likely than type 1 on the genitals of recurring.

If you have one type of herpes, you're unlikely to get the other. And it's highly unlikely that you'll get the same type on both parts of the body.

Totally recommend I-lysine. I get cold sores when stressed so take this and haven't had one since. It also helped when I had shingles.

Yes the gum clinic will test which type it is. You have to be showing symptoms though.. basically the sores have to be sore and weepy.. if you're not showing symptoms, there's no test.

People freak when they hear the word herpes... but chicken pox is a form of herpes and almost everyone has had that. It never leaves your body.

It's easy to get hsv-1 on your genitals through oral sex. It's difficult to get hsv-2 on your mouth because the gland that holds the virus near the mouth doesn't like type 2. It prefers type 1.

Similarly, the gland holding the virus near your genitals prefers type 2, but it will take type 1 if type 2 hasn't been introduced to it.

There's then no space in that gland for the other type.

Type 2 is the 'dirty' one because it's typically caught through sex.. type 1 is more accepted because old aunt Mabel probably gave it to you when you were a kid.

If you haven't had chicken pox you can get chicken pox from someone who has shingles, however you can't catch shingles as it is the virus re -emerging from the body. Can be very nasty.

Here.. this sums up what I'm trying to say but with less waffle. Healthcentral website.

Under a microscope, HSV 1 – and 2 look nearly identical. Both types infect a mucosal surface, usually the mouth or the genitals and then ascend the nerves and lay dormant latency in the nervous system.

For both types, at least 2/3 of those infected have no symptoms or symptoms to mild to notice.

BOTH types can recur and spread even when symptoms aren’t present. Studies show that people with recurrent oral HSV-1 shed virus in their saliva about 5% of the time even when they show no symptoms.I n the first year of infection, people with genital HSV-2 shed virus from the genital area about 6-10% of days when they show no symptoms, and less often over time.

The primary difference between HSV 1 and 2 are where they tend to establish latency. HSV tends to live in a collection of nervesnear the ear. From there it tends to recur on the lip or face. HSV2 likes a collection of nerves at the base of the spine and tends to recur in the genital area.

However, did you know that either type can reside in either or both parts of the body and infect BOTH areas? In some parts of the world, genital infection with HSV-1 is as common as HSV 2 genital infection.

But, if you already have one type of HSV, it is harder to get the other type. That’s because the virus causes the body to produce antibodies that provide some crossover protection against the other type should it entering the body.
