Having seen a number of posts recently where people have had breaches of privacy or serious concerns, I wanted to share an observation. Apologies if this is old news to everyone else, but I've only recently joined Facebook.

Some years ago, I met and played with a lovely couple. Before the meet I exchanged phone numbers with the lady so we could build the tension with some flirty texting. We lost touch some time after the meet and that was that.

Now a member of Facebook I recently noticed a photo of the lady in the 'People you might know' panel, along with her full name, which we'd never exchanged.

Since then I've also seen another couple here that I met for a social once.

How could this be? I don't have fb on my phone, nor have I ever given them my phone number, but I do use WhatsApp (owned by fb).

Fortunately both couples were genuine and honest, and likewise I have no interest in outting anyone on here or snooping around in their private lives, but it is a concern when you end up sharing phone numbers.

When you add your phone number to Facebook and you have synced your contacts I think it looks through and suggests people based on those. It's happened to me before too

This has happened to me, people I spoke to on WhatsApp years ago kept popping up as suggested friends of Facebook. Rather unnerving!

Now I use kik for all fab business as you don't have to swap numbers.

Another reason never to give your phone number out or use whatsapp

it picks up on the most tenuous things..a graffiti face on a wall in a mates photo popped up, cropped down to just the face, in my 'people you may know'...

Did you put your phone number on your Facebook account?

And yes, FB and Whatsapp do link profiles via hone numbers they have been since last summer, but you can stop this from happening in the future.

This is the interesting thing, I have never registered my phone number on fb nor do I have it on my phone. And when the new agreement for WhatsApp came out (and there was much publicity at the time) I opted not to share any details.

I'm not overly worried as I've only ever met verified couples who like me are just looking for a naughty adventure, and who tend to have much more to lose than a (genuinely) single guy anyway, but I just wanted to urge caution against sharing phone numbers.

Stay safe everyone and I hope for all what happens on fab stays on fab.

I remember reading an article when Facebook bought whatsapp. The article expressed surprise that Facebook was willing to pay the crazy high price that it paid for whatsapp. The article expressed even more surprise when they announced that whatsapp would be free (remember, it was going to cost 99 pence after the first year....no longer).

The article suggested we ask ourselves why Facebook would do this. I asked myself and the only conclusion I could come up with was that they weren't buying whatsapp - they were buying all of the information whatsapp could provide them.

I just don't have Facebook, myself. I can't think of a single source that has more information about people than someone's Facebook profile and I'm not willing to put all that online.

You can lock down Facebook so it won't associate your phone number with your profile. This will stop you being recommended to others on fb

In your bed

The Web is awash with data.

Phone numbers linked to apps, linked to email addresses, linked to other email addresses and other apps.

Also you may not have added your phone number to your account, but if the other person adds your phone number to their contacts and this syncs with their Facebook account then Facebook knows that that person knows your contact number.

Fb will suggest you as someone to know if

The iP range looks local to another.

If you log in it will look at your cookies from other sites

It will suggest you to people if you search on fb for someone's name

I had an interesting scenario I was chatting to a guy on here who I then traded pictures with who immediately sent me a message back telling me I wasn't who I claimed but a lesbian from the South coast of England on Facebook.

I asked for the name and sure enough the EXACT picture I'd sent to him was attached to this Facebook profile.

Facebook were good and removed it as soon as I'd verified to them it was my picture and that account was suspended bit it was still very odd

I had this happen. And some single guys look quite different with a gf and baby in tow.

I barely use FB anyway but prefer to start with Kik when arranging to meet on here.

we looked into installing kik but the app wanted access to all of our contacts, pictures and information too...mind you, so did the subway app so we sacked them both off. it's also why we never put pictures on here that I also have on my Facebook account as people can reverse image search and find your profile from there. also my Facebook privacy settings are tighter than a camels arse in a sandstorm. everything we have nowadays shares everything with everything just so it can target advertising at you...it's scary

The Internet is about connections.

If the couples had stored your number on their phones, would it pick up your profile?

My fear of over helpful apps, is when Facebook tries to post photos that I may not want to share with everyone.

It will only do this if u have the app. Don't use the Facebook app and your safe. Just sign in via internet.

I was getting this and I never installed the Facebook App. In the end I just got shot of Facebook, only signed up to log into Tinder and both were fucking useless.

This happened to me when whatsapp changed their criteria or something a few months ago but you can change the privacy settings on whatsapp I believe . Kik is easier for discretion.
