I do as to me it indicates someone's education and intellectual ability. As well as it being careless. I know a lot of pp on here don't care about it but when you are thinking about being intimate with someone, for me, there has to be an intellectual connection and since lack of education seems to be correlated with a lack of critical thinking and right wing views, I'm sorry but I do use lack of grammar to filter out those people that I don't want to spend my time with...

Happy to hear other points of view and I'm aware that pp can be dyslexic etc but I guess it's just a filter...

Bad spelling and grammar is off-putting for us, in this day and age especially with predictive text, there's not really an excuse. xx

no it doesn't. although if i struggle to read what's said it will put me off bothering to decipher what they're saying.

met some very intelligent guys who don't have great grammar. intelligence is rare anyway. loads of people think they're smarter than what they actually are. so no, i won't use grammar as a sign of intelligence at all. just they're good at copying others and fitting into conventional standards.

OP. You open your profile telling everybody you are intelligent and pretty.

Firstly in life how do we judge pretty and intelligence. If it's your own scale that's fine by myself.

From my experiences in life I find people who are generally intelligent academically are not always the sharpest tools when it comes to other forms of intelligence.

Just because somebody cannot string great sentences and spelling together doesn't mean they are not intelligent.

I have worked with engineers in the past who struggle to read and write but they have designed built and created wonderful pieces of work.

Are they intelligent or not ??

Sorry, but I'm a bit of a stickler for spelling and punctuation.

I believe good spelling and punctuation shows education, and to some degree, says something about the person.

I admit it's a prejudice, but in relationships, we're entitled to have our choices.

If we receive a reply poorly expressed in written form, it does put us off immediately, even if the writer would be compatible.

Think of a job application. If the recipient found poor spelling and punctuation on the form, the candidate would be likely to be put at the back of the rest.

It's prejudicial, but so are all relationship choices.

It's really no different on here to be honest.

We don't find it a turn off. We do find a well written email a turn on however.

We've met some wonderful people over the years, had a laugh with them, and then had a look at their profile to find it full of awful grammar and spelling mistakes. Some people are bad at English, doesn't make them bad people, or unsexy, or devoid of a good personality.

Personally I don't mind if a message is grammatically correct or has spelling mistakes.

I am not keen on 'text speak' because it take me too long to work out what is trying to be said.

People who have dyslexia are of high intelligence. I'm guessing some people are not aware that Albert Einstein was dyslexic.

One thing, just because somebody doesn't spell or punctuate well, doesn't mean they aren't intelligent. Lack of formal education doesn't mean the person is necessarily stupid.

There are many intelligent people with low levels of education.

Yes it does matter to me, I understand dyslexia but if you know you have a problem then make sure you have a spell checker on the phone or laptop. Bad spelling really does make a difference.

I am sure on occasion I make mistakes but it isnt constant. Especially as the phone types what it likes sometimes. LOL

If I were applying for a job, or writing a formal letter or report then I'd be inclined to agree with you.

However I'm not, I'm attempting to engage in social conversation, and if I feel the recipient is going to be critically marking the conversation like a GCSE or A level examiner, then I'm likely to feel uncomfortable, not be myself or simply not bother.

Coincidentally, in my opinion, unless one is professionally qualified or trained in the manner of an English teacher, professor or examiner, then I'm not sure one should appoint oneself as such to be examining another's spelling or grammar, as it's quite possible such scrutiny wouldn't be at a conventionally agreed standard.

I don't think it's a case of somebody marking someone like a teacher.

It's about putting out your response and receiving a reply.

If it's badly constructed and indicates a poor attitude to conventional norms, at the very least, it shows a slapdash response.

As mentioned earlier, we have spell checkers, Google and many sources of information which could be used to construct a coherent message.

Surely, at the very least, they could run a spell check.

Having said all of that, if, for example, I was to spell incorrectly in a chat room for instance, that's acceptable because of the live nature of the event. I've done that many, many times!!!

A message should be more considered and more carefully thought out.

PS my previous deleted post was because I wrote effect rather than affect.

PPS this isn't an addition, I just wanted to write PPS so I could say this now stands for "people's" rather than post post scriptum, according to the OP. (I guess....)

We actively block people that make to much of a point of spelling.

Saying someone is lacking in education because there spelling/grammar is not up to "your" standard shows to me a lack of education on your part.

My spelling isn't great but I can code in 14 different languages, I teach programming on line, I am self employed (since 18) and a wiz at maths and science.

My wife is terrible at spelling but never posts on this forum now because of the amount of people that think they have more intelligence than her and feel they have to pull her up when she makes mistakes.

Have fun, a person bad at spelling

Yes, I work closely and communicate regularly with lawyers and solicitors, judges, teachers, police at all levels from bottom all the way up to inspector, MP's, Ofsted inspectors, CQC inspectors, social workers, directors of multi million pound companies etc etc etc, I could go on and on.

By people's measure of "education" in this thread, all these folks communications with me that I have mentioned, are not educated beyond preschool.

I'm just off to fire a few emails out to let them know.

I can assure you those emails won't be grammatically correct or spelled particularly well either.

Intelligence comes in many different forms, Being able to spell or using the correct grammar doesn't necessary mean you are intelligent, I keep up to date with the current news, TV programs, Documentaries and such and can hold my own when chatting to people but spelling and my basic English are at a low standard,

A whole message or repeat messages in text speak would put me off a person, Mainly because I cant understand what they are saying

I use Google a lot when chatting on here to help with my spelling but sill make mistakes

Depends how bad it is... The fact that people are poor at spelling and grammar doesn't necessarily mean they are lacking intelligence.

Lots of text speak and strange abbreviations is another matter entirely. Apart from the fact I'll probably need it translating, It screams lazy to me... I don't want lazy when it comes to sex.

I understand text speak is somewhat not the best, however I firmly believe that some people become so far up their own arses when it comes to spelling and grammar that they might just lose out on meeting fun people from all walks of life.If you cannot get by barriers to some peoples communication , then you are not that great at communication yourself.

I could probably talk the arse off to people about macro photography, quantum physics etc, but at the end of it..I can show I'm a funny, witty, intelligent type without having to show levels of intelligence that are simply not needed.

I've noticed a growing trend recently where people make what are clearly statements, but follow them up with multiple question marks.

For example, I've seen:

"Hi, I'm Nicole, and I love dogs ??"

OK.

Right.

Are you asking me if you love dogs?

Are you confused as to the reason(s) why you love dogs?

That really grinds my gears for some reason!

I'll admit to ignoring more than one message on another site from what I'm sure were otherwise perfectly lovely people because of that.

No, we're not really a put off at all. People are brought up in all sorts of life, some dragged up lol but you can't tell from the personality when you get chatting to them, the vibe they give off. Can't really blame them for the way their parents choose to bring them up. Places in the world where people can't even afford to learn to read and write so no, we're not really put off in the slightest.

Our personal opinion to people that do get really offended by the lack of somebody's punctuation can't really be as laid back and down to earth as their profile states. That's just our opinion though. What do we know, right? lol

To me, it's all about first impressions and while I might not consider it necessarily a deal breaker, poor spelling does, it a lot of case, indicate carelessness, lack of attention / effort and can perhaps give the impression that if someone has this attitude to spelling, then it may reflect on their attitude towards how they present themselves, and more importantly, how much effort or attention they might devote to a meet.

It matters to me, the odd spelling mistake is fine but some people just aren't capable of stringing a sentence together. Shortening words such as ppl for people and how r u instead of writing the full words is laziness.

There's no need for it on here. Then some people wonder why they can't get any meets.

As a dyslexic I am only too aware of how tricky it can be to get spelling correct, even with spell checkers (very often I cannot see what is wrong with something I have written even when that pesky red line is screaming about it). So as long as I can read the message I am not too concerned about the spelling.

Whilst grammar can sometimes be indicative of a person's education, I would prefer to Base that estimation on the contents of the message rather than the medium used to convey it. Afterall someone with perfect spelling and grammar drilled into them can still be intelectually challenged.

If I'm interested in someone I always have a little check of their forum posts to see if they've ever said anything political. Although there have been studies linking right wing voting trends to low education (I'm specifically not saying intelligence here), I think that it's difficult to make that kind of analysis on a one to one basis. Forum posts are much more reliable.

I don't tend to meet people who can't write coherently. Odd mistakes aren't a problem, but incoherency and an inability to find the shift key are a huge barrier to communication on the Internet which makes things more difficult to get to know someone.

If I'm texting or chatting in the forums I don't always check what I write because it's going too fast, therefore typos happen. Though I do sometimes remove my post if there are errors, then rewrite and repost. But we do put a lot care into our profile text and into first messages, in order to make a good impression. We wouldn't dream of pressing send without proof reading. Some would call that anally retentive. We call it taking pride in how we present ourselves, an approach that we like to think we use in all aspects of life. I guess we like people who are like us. Someone who doesn't care about how they present themselves we are unlikely to get on with. Doesn't bother me if people can't spell - I actually find that irrelevant as everybody has access to a spell check in this day an age. It's the not bothering to correct excessive amounts of typos that comes across to us as sloppy. And everybody knows that a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full-stop, so I can't fathom why anybody would care so little as to do otherwise.

That's the difference for us. A few mistakes are fine, but there comes a point where it's evident people are being lazy, more so with spelling than grammar and punctuation. Lack of punctuation just makes it hard to read correctly.

"To be honest my argument with the wife is people with half a brain can read straight through grammer and spelling mistakes anyway so why does it matter ? ."

Fwiw - many people with dyslexia can struggle to read poorly written text.

They are often extremely intelligent and have far more than "half a brain".

My partner who I live with for example is heavily dyslexic. He writes very badly and struggles to read poorly composed messages from people (who write like he does). But he is a computer scientist at the top of the ladder and writes code like... Well... Better than I can write English (and I'm a writer).

So it's not always about having half a brain. It's about giving yourself the best possible chance of success with the people who you would like to meet.

Everybody makes the odd typo from time to time, but a message full of bad grammar or spelling would put me off a bit. Not that I can afford to filter out messages on here for that reason!

One pet hate I've noticed a lot of recently is people mixing up "been" and "being", "seen" and "seeing" and "non" and "none" which does make me wonder if people really don't understand the difference between these completely different words?

Away with the fairies (Liverpool to you)

Of course there could be another possible cause for mistakes .

The speed some people type and send. Auto correct can put some interesting words in if you don't check before sending .

Hi.

I do care about spelling and grammar but do make an exception if, having viewed the profile of the sender, I find that English isn't their first language.

And when people use "are" when they should use "our". The people who read the letters sent to The Jeremy Kyle Show must see this one a lot!

I stopped reading as soon as I read the opening post. Why oh why do people do it to themselves? If your going to bitch about grammar at least get it right yourself.

Grammar doesn't both me in the slightest and I couldn't careless if mine has the odd error. What I do enjoy is picking faults with people who obviously think they are above others.

With modern technologies like autocorrect a lot can be forgiven. Autocorrect regularly gets things wrong.

"I do as to me it indicates someone's education and intellectual ability.

Are they intelligent or not ??"

I know an Engineer who was awarded a National Engineering Award despite being Dyslexic. The actual irony lies in the OP having grammatical errors in their opening post and some later contributors alao uaing my favourite lazy tool.....

"Wifes pet hate is poor grammar , no capital letters on names , no commas , no full stops etc . Even I get a bollocking if I send a message and the grammar is poor or there is a spelling mistake . Personally it doesn't bother me the younger generation are brought up on tex talk so most can't spell anyway . I can see you all now checking this message for spelling mistakes

I've got to admit - one of the things that really, really, really drives me up the wall is people who put spaces before commas and full stops. Sorry.

Ooh yes. It's just so unnecessary. "

If someone is dyslexic I hope they would use spell check or explain their lack of spelling/grammar to me in the message. I don't arrange to meet if the spelling/grammar is bad. I think it either indicates lack of maturity or lack of effort. M x

"Some of the messages I get sent just don't make sense.."

That is what I tend to get - poor spelling and no punctuation = a message I have no idea how to reply to!

A lot of these messages are sent by guys with really poor profiles, so if they can't be bothered why should I bother to try to translate their equally poor messages? It just makes for a really hard conversation to have

"Bad spelling and grammar is off-putting for us, in this day and age especially with predictive text, there's not really an excuse. xx"

Predictive text doesn't improve your grammar, it just means you are more likely to send a message containing a totally inappropriate or unrelated word (I use you in the general sense not as in you personally)

For me it depends, if it's an obvious spelling mistake then fine we all make them. If it is a message which requires a translator then I'm not going to sit and try work out what it says because someone is too lazy to type the word 'you'

Pretty much the same as this.

I can accept people's errors. I make lots myself, and the speed I tap away at my phone to post on s thread means, i very rarely look back and read through before I press post.

And bad grammar to me just means you got a C in English and not an A star, or you talk the way geography has tought you. (I'm near Bolton, some of the phrases I have to google myself)

But, I see posts with absolute disregard to making it illegible and I cringe. If this is what is sent in messages I fear it's not the best impression.

Whether good/bad spelling/grammar I am inclined to read between the lines; that is should a message extend that far .

Embarrassment, so often a byproduct of inadvertent stigmatisation. I sympathise.

It doesn't bother me that much...but then maybe I do allow people to make mistakes and also some have specific difficulties that differ from our own.

Intelligence has got little to do with education which seems to be a common mistake. Some of the world's most intelligent people had little education.

Education especially in the western idea is limiting and narrow. ...teaching not to be open and stretching the mind to think and explore except in a way society expects. It is ultimately the way to control people to conform. It's threatening if too many people choose not to conform, many don't know how to handle being different...but then if accepted it widens and broadens our collective capacities.

I'm a Sapiophile and I'm stimulated by communication and challenging my brain.... If someone can spell or not doesn't mean they can't challenge my mind.

Maybe we need to ask ourselves why we find something off putting or offensive...It might reveal more about ourselves than the other party.

Any thoughts?

It's fairly important to us, especially if it's the first contact you have with us. If someone's put a lot of thought into what they want to say and their text has a few typos or missing punctuation then that's one thing. Getting a one line message that has no capitals, no punctuation and every other word is misspelled is another and will likely get binned.

We tend to form a mental picture of the person based on their writing style. If it's brief and sloppy then we assume the sender's lazy with no imagination. If it's detailed with a few errors then we assume the sender is enthusiastic to talk to us so is tripping over themselves as they type. If it's just a wall of text with no punctuation then we pass out before we get to the end.

I'm dyslexic myself and certainly no literary genius but I do try and make sure that what I write holds up reasonably well from a SPAG standpoint.

I have noted too that spelling policing is actually frowned upon by fab and i believe can be seen as passive bullying so care should be taken when commenting about someone's spelling unless like their profile they ask for advice.
