How do you all spot fake profiles?

So with the phrase "back on fab after deleting my profile, if you knew me before feel free to verify" being so common, this is obviously a bit of a concern. At this point it wouldn't be hard to pretend to be an old user and get your first veri from a genuine person they already knew.
Once one fake verification happens, it just makes the entire concept stupid and unreliable. What have been your checks for finding out who's real, and who's chatting shit? |

A No brainer really. Chat away and it may become obvious, if alright at this point then arrange a No Strings meet in a public environment emphasising that no play whatsoever will take place.
So easy to sort the genuine ones from the rest, the only trouble is that there are so damn many time wasters. |

There really are loads of timewasters, and we're still very new to this so I'm sure we can seem like that as we're only really willing to meet at clubs right now. And that's usually an organised thing too, we don't go every night, so we're not gunna be meeting anyone right away.
We've had a few people willing to cam though, and it really helps.
We've noticed a lot of people with screenshot images though, and even people who've taken pictures of porn on a screen. I mean, how stupid do they think people are? |

There are loads of obvious fakes on Fab, but genuine people verifying fake people thinking they are real people doesn't seem that likely. |

Sometimes it pays to follow the veri trail. We found a well verified couple all from single guys, go to each guys veri & they have one from the couple sometimes a social one from one of the other guys.
Proper fakes (oxymoron) are easy, The what was originally a couple & is now just him isn't so easy but asking for a certain recent pic or fem/fem chat usually sorts that.

This is the male of the couple, and maybe I'm just being overly cautious, but it does seem possible as the verifiaction runs on an honour system. it's we were happy our first ones came from a meet, and why we look for more than 1 or 2 veri's and avoid people with private veri's. |

Simply ask to speak with them on the phone or webcam and the fakers run a mile. If exchanging messages by Whatsapp or Kik, I always ask people to send a quick voice message to be sure who I am talking to. Sometimes I will do a Reverse Image Search on google. |

Yes, you are absolutely right (and generally take the right approach), but what you originally described is a different thing.
In your first post you were suggesting that people can create a fake profile by pretending to be genuine people who have left, and getting genuine people who have met the original people to verify the new fake profile. Why would that ever happen? |

I can see how that looks odd, I just mean it's easy enough to steal few pictures off the internet. If you saw someone you recognised return to the site, would you verify them again?
If it's not really them, they now have a verified account they could use to verify one that's actually them, but who's never met anyone. It could make them look more experienced and more appealing. Also, it negates the "search for only verified people" option. Meaning not only will you find fake profiles if that's happened, but that you'll find liars who've never had a meet but say they have. Again this may be my overly logical, tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theory side, but that's just a possible scenario I can see being abused. For clarification, I've worked in software testing, so ive had to find workarounds Nd exploits for a living. |

That's as maybe, but the scenario you describe is so unlikely as to be meaningless.
Fab is stuffed to the gills with verified fakes, the vast majority because some guys will verify each other to further create fake profiles and genuine guys will sometimes verify fakes they've never met because they think with the little head rather than the big one, and hope it will lead to a meet.
None of this invalidates the verification system, which functions perfectly for people who use their common sense. |

Since joining Fab I have always found that trusting my own instincts works far better than relying on verifications from strangers. On the whole I have been lucky and met some great people and made some very good friends along the way.... and enjoyed the ride!! |

I've done google image searches on a few "too good to be true" types. In almost every case, their pictures were stolen/borrowed.
It's not so much the fakes (as I think they're easy to spot) it's more the deluded wannabes who drive me mad! |

I have re-verified friends when they come back to fab after deleting their profile. Someone I know can easily prove they are who they say they are, they can tell me something about how we met for example.
If someone mails me out of the blue with a remember me we chatted for 5 minutes 3 years ago message, then no, they aren't going to receive a veri from me. |

Private veris?
I have veris on my summary that I can't show because the wording no longer exists. If someone leaves the site the wording of their veri dissappears with them, the same happens if someone blocks me after leaving me a veri. So a private veri as you call it could simply be one that can no longer be shown. |

As someone who doesn't give out my number, talk on the phone or show my verifications, looks like I must be fake then.
If it's fake female profiles you're concerned about, you can just tell. Men and women's style of writing and messaging is very different, in my experience. |

Same, our number gets given to very few & no one until we've met, unless a regular forumite that we interact with.
I cannot believe how thick some fakers are though. The same username bar the number added to then end (four accounts) appeared on our local list about 1am. 22yr old Woman, can accommodate etc. Status update "Wanna Lick Some Pussy". Now maybe 22yr old bi's talk like that? But I'd give them a wide berth anyway if they did

True though this may be, there are people out there that could fool most people. Yeah it seems specific pictures, phone and cam are the only real ways.

If I miss out on meets because I won't do these things then so be it. I'd rather someone just meet me for a quick coffee than jump through hoops like phone calls or going on cam because they can't tell who's real and who's a middle aged bloke wanking in their bedroom. |

We go by the 'too good to be true' approach. If someone pops up in your area and they're a young, sex-crazed nymph with porn star photos then they're likely to be fake. Tineye the pics to see if they're from online and then keep an eye on them. If they're still around after a few weeks then they MAY be legit.
Photo verifications count for little as we've busted so many fakes with a verification that it makes them worthless. Following the veri trail can help if they have them.

That depends! We would not give our phone number out until a level of trust had been obtained.
Likewise, we only Cam if we feel like it and would not be performing puppet's just because someone wanted to see if we are genuine!
We know that we are genuine, if people think otherwise, then that is their problem rather than ours!

Sorry if that seems arrogant in some way, but it's not. It's about understanding that there are a lot of timewasters and fakes around, and not wanting to spend time pursuing someone that's not real or actually willing to meet, and to not end up in a dangerous situation. It's not a clique thing all. Being verified just helps you ignore the obvious ones, nothing more. |

That doesn't make sense to me but maybe I'm misunderstanding the post.
If they say they are back and ask me to re verify them, if I don't remember them I won't re verify them. I get plenty of messages from people saying they know me, but it often turns out that they are "mistaken" and don't know me at all.

Experience, cynicism, but most of all intuition. There always seems to be a little give away who someone isn't what they want you to think they are.
Don't convince yourself somebody is real/OK/Genuine because you want them to be.

Funnily enough I've not been on fabs for aaaages and I'm trying to get back into the whole scene, which is something I'm really struggling with. I'm pretty sure there's a few people that think I'm a fake. Granted I've got one veri from something like 2 years ago but it's so difficult to get my foot in the door.
Moreover I do believe a fake is messaging me but I'm out of touch and not sure! |
