I've been overweight for about 10 years and have decided enough is enough and I need to lose about 5 stone. I'm not physically active as I have absolutely no idea where to begin. My doctor said I should have a big breakfast and lunch and something minimal at supper time.

The trouble is I don't seem to be able to moderate my food intake. Once I crave some thing sweet I tend to eat it until it's all gone. Any suggestions most welcome please. T I A

Check with your doctor about a prescription for exercise. It should give you a reduced cost at your local sports center and some advice from a trainer.

Swimming is the best to start with as it is low impact and will support you at first.

A lot of local sport centers do special days for us slow swimmers with lanes set out.

Good luck and try not to break a leg.

All good advice try to substitute sweet food for fruit and drink plenty of water as that will help make you feel full and it is good for the skin and body.

Self regulation is what I struggle with. I've had all the health checks and fortunately I haven't given myself diabetes.

I just don't seem to be able to stop overeating . I know only I can make a difference though

I lost 5 stone last year. You need to be determined and stay positive. I quit drinking and gave up carbonated drinks as these have a massive psychological impact on craving sweet treats in particular.

I also tried to make basic healthy swaps across my diet such as weaning myself down to skimmed milk and swapping things like white bread for wholemeal. These are all minor changes but they all add up over the weeks/months.

Just do your best and don't beat yourself up if you fall off the wagon just try draw a line under it and resist the mentality of "fuck it I've had one and ruined my diet for the day so I might as well have more"

It very challenging but try to break it down into smaller achievable goals such as a stone or half a stone at a time when you achieve those goals and see your body shape changing it really makes a difference.

I think your right. I should try and look at it as one small step not one massive task ahead as it's really daunting.

start thinking before you eat your food.

think about things like, does my body need this? how will eating this affect my body? so what if it tastes good, it does nothing for my body.

also cut down on sugar/sweeteners in drinks if you crave sugar. i found other things taste sweet enough when i cut down on sweeteners in drinks. so don't drink sweet drinks and cut down on the ones you make yourself.

don't feel bad if you slip up and return to a bad habit because you couldn't control yourself, but do think again about the harm you're doing to your body. you deserve to eat properly, and to be healthy.

Ok so anyone can slim down with a little help and advise and willpower.

See your Dr for a general check over,healthy eating plan with a dietitian accessed through Dr,plan your meals on a weekly meal planner,shopping for this once a week and ONLY buy whats on shopping list...NO choccy treats,snacks etc

Join a local gym,be confident about you,do not feel uncomfortable about being around all the skinny minis in lycra...your there and doing it for YOURSELF,if your lacking confidence start taking classes with other ladies,aqua aerobics is great with a group of ladies

If you can go 'cold turkey' on sweet foods you should find they taste horrible if you go back to them.

Calorie counting and all of that makes it seem really hard. Just eating well works and don't eat after 8pm at night.

I've lost 4 stone over the last 5 years. Really slowly. This summer I had some months without pain and I was able to cook properly and be more active. I lost another stone.

I never set out to lose weight. I just wanted to be healthier and the weight loss was a side effect.

Once I've had my spine operation I'll be getting back to it.

So don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself OP

I started walking a bit more. Then a bit more. Then a bit more. I also downloaded a food tracker app for my phone and never, ever cheat on it. It didn't take me long to start changing my eating habits once I really confronted them and once the weight started coming off it gave me the motivation I needed. I have plateaued with a stone and a half still to go but I am still 5 stone down and only fluctuate a few pounds here and there. And I still log every calorie and every walk.

My physio suggested one bar a day. Chuck all ur sweet stuff out, an once a day walk to the shop an buy one of the 70p bars of chocolate, an the swimming is great, as I can't walk far or fast but in the water I can swim really fast. You can do it, it's hard but I can do it!

I simply don't buy the stuff I need to avoid eating.

I don't buy chocolate or crisps.

I work so I have a lunchbox so it's easy to simply put less in it. I get really hungry at times and to stop myself struggling I drink squash to fill a space.

It works for me.

Great advice. Start moving, plan to walk 4 or 5 times a week. Begin with round the block and increase the distance as you get more comfortable and faster.

Be disciplined with a food diary, when you have to write everything down it stops the snacking.

Set yourself achievable targets.

But it's not the same for everyone, different people different things, or me cutting crips an biscuits out is pointles as very rarely av um. It's the confidence I need to do go more swimming, but thankfully just been signed up for a boot camp, well away atm, so hoping I will! As some days I'm just in so much pain.so just take smaller steps, drink water if hungry drink water wait 20min then c how u feel, sort of works for me.... good luck.

I think you have won half the battle already, just identifying and addressing that you need to do something is a brilliant start, so give yourself a big pat on the back.

All good advice here, one thing I found, before every meal have a large glass of water, this will make you feel fuller quicker, it really works, recognise when you feel full and stop. And lots of water throughout the day helps those hunger pains.

I can resist everything but temptation. Not sure if it's the type of food or just volume you have issues with but if you don't have high calorie snacks and foods in the house you can't over indulge on them. If you can empty the cupboards of any junk and replace it with healthy bits you're off to a start. And definitely combine it with exercise. Even a little bit of walking when you usually wouldn't will help if that needs to be your starting point.

I have done Slimming World 3 times, it works brilliantly for losing weight amd could eat loads but I have never been able to manage the maintaining bit.

Vinegar or things pickled in vinegar like onions gherkins etc kill sweet cravings. Also as a slimming world member those items are known as speed foods so good for boosting the metabolism and fill you quickly.

I'd like to lose a couple of stone and according to my bmi I'm obese but my gp said I'm not overweight enough for him to refer me to anyone. So, I searched google and found a local 'Healthy Lifestyle' scheme that's run by the NHS. They provide support and encouragement in relation to healthier eating choices and exercise and as has been said above it's all about little but sustainable changes. Perhaps you could check to see if there is anything similar in your area?

I cleared my cupboards of crisps (my main weakness) and only have them as a treat at weekends. White foods are out and my bread, rice and pasta are now all wholemeal. I've set the alarm on my phone to go off every hour during the day and make a point of getting up from my desk and walking round the building for 5 minutes. If I'm watching the telly during the evening or at weekends then instead of fast-forwarding through the adverts I walk up and down my stairs.

These are all little changes but they are a start and they are helping to break old habits and start new healthier ones.

But be careful with the fruit which is loaded with sugar so moderate your intake of that.

I needed to lose 4 stone.

I've lost 1 and a half by walking at least half an hour a day, solid walking without stopping. You can do smaller walks and more of them.

Food wise, I didn't put myself on a diet. I stopped buying bread, biscuits and anything with sugar and flour in. I have those things rarely, and not of I'm sitting home doing nothing.

I've found that having a bowl of salad made up in the fridge helps, as I can eat a small bowl if I feel hungry.

I make soups and stews with chicken or turkey-no potatoes.

Stock up on pulses, peas and dried beans and make soups.

If you fancy something sweet have grated apple or banana with porridge.

I've just bought Jamie Oliver's super foods cook book, which has explanation of why we need what and how much of it we need.

I'm losing weight slowly and steadily.

Although, I don't have a sweet tooth, which helps.

Once you lose that first stone and can see the difference you could find it easier.

I'd consider the need for therapy, if there is something deep inside that is limiting your self-esteem or similar. Only we individually know what we're up to and potentially what's driving us. Sometimes it needs someone else to be with us, so that we can put things to rest or get to accept ourselves, warts and all.

Otherwise, good advice on diet and exercise. Start small and don't knock yourself for not making huge weight reductions. Taking a step is better for you than if you haven't. Good luck!

Exercise..makes you positive although doesn't help greatly with weight loss, cut out sugary drinks and food, cut right down on other carbs, don't eat any ready meals, stop drinking alcohol, set a target weight and target date and tell everyone you know... No backing out.. I've found hypnosis tapes work too and I'm no hippy! Good luck, I've lost 3 stone in a year...you can do it

I was (am still am really!) massively overweight and same problems as you. I went through local NHS healthy start- got 12 free weeks at slimming world. I've been going 5 months and am just short of 4 stone lost. I feel so much better. I don't have opportunity to excercise much, I just try and walk more- and plenty of fab excercise

It's easy to stick to and you can still eat plenty. Worth a go x

I find if I don't buy the sweet stuff etc then I can't be bothered to walk to the shop to get them. But if I do actually bother at least I am getting exercise on the way!

Write everything down that you eat. I find it makes me think more about what I am putting in my mouth and sometimes shames me into not eating something 'bad' and picking up a piece of fruit instead.

I still drink fizzy drinks but only the sugar free versions. Helps me with the cravings for sweet things.

I'm in the middle of my free 12 weeks, I'm losing weight every week but not as fast as I could as it hasn't been the best time to start a new healthy eating plan as I've been so busy! What it has done has made me reevaluate everything I put on my plate/in my gob, so even when I have "made poor choices" I'm acutely aware of it

Slimming world or similar groups are great for support and ideas and when you have a bad week to know you not alone is great, is there any local walking groups, by having someone to share your journey with helps, well done so far I'm overweight had lost weight and gained it back but back on track now

My wife Kat was in similar position a cpl of years ago.

I know your GP recommended a big breakfast......and most things you read will say the same.....but she stopped eating at breakfast time.

She wasn't hungry......and all it meant was by about 1030 she'd be snacking.

So now..... she doesn't eat anything till lunchtime.....and do is eating less.

And she's losing weight at a comfortable rate.....and feeling much better.

She's lucky then as skipping breakfast is the worst thing you can do, you need breakfast to kick start your metabolism and boost calorie burning for the day

Im in the same boat, Used to be super fit then , had something similar happen to me as the Bolton Footballer .

So was always able to eat big as I trained everyday. So over the years my weight has crept up until finally it has got to the point of being health damaging.

I have managed to loose 2 stone so far and need to loose another three to feel comfortable. I have done this by simply adopting the eat less diet. I have small breakfast, one that I know is healthy but small. usually a bowl of cereal, or porridge. I then allow myself to have one small meal during the day, (and I mean small) and try to make sure its before 5pm and then and this is the hard part nothing until breakfast the next morning.

I found the first few days hard, but your appetite does reduce, and I am now at the stage if I eat a big meal I simply feel unwell/uncomfortable, and with losing two stone and eating less I feel far far more comfortable. Its about getting into your head what you need to eat and as best as possible sticking too it. Weight yourself everyday, and use the days you loose as motivation, and the days you don't as adding to your determination to loose the next day. But above all keep at it, being overweight is effecting my life, both mentally and physically,,,and feeling better and healthier wins hands down. Keep at it, and as I said simply eat less, and keep in your mind that what you are eating is enough for your body to work properly. Food in excess is as deadly as the worst of drugs.

I concur with those saying you do not need a big breakfast thats old school thought. You only need a decent breakfast if your going to be physically active from the off. I not wait until your body wakes up, and then have a small meal...... eating a big breakfast when your not hungry is just a way of filling yourself with more calories and then eating more meals during the day. As you feel hungry later on. Better to eat say mid-day then have small before evening snack meal and then nothing until next day., Your body will appreciate the fasting hours and will burn off fat.

I was told I had to loose weight as diabetes was totally out of control.

And it hurt. It REALLY hurt. I faffed about for months. Everyday I woke up, it was the same. I would start today.

By 10am...it had gone to the wall.

What really did it for me, I was dragged (yes, literally) to a gym. Given a Personal Trainer and went 2 times a wk. I bloody hated it. And the day before I went, I was in the worst mood.

After a couple of months, I branched out to Aqua Zumba, dreading the "Walk of shame" to the pool. But, there were people of ALL shapes and sizes and they did'nt give a stuff. they just cracked on with it.

Then I braved real Zumba with a girl I met at the gym. And I don't like it. But I go.

And I've lost weight. I still eat plenty. A lot of protein as my body seems to need it.

If someone had told me in January I would be doing 2 days at the gym and 2 Zumbas, I would have laughed at them while hot-footing it to the fridge!

You can make a small difference everyday. But you have to commit to making that difference every day.

And it will take effort, guts and you will hate everyone. But it is worth it. I promise.

I lost 3 stone last year and I've been maintaining for the past year, I did slimming world. It's not about the diet as such though, I'd tried before, it's massively about being in the right frame of mind. You seem determined so with a bit of PMA you can do it. Good luck xx

Make a shopping list and stick to it.

Don't shop when you are hungry.

Use sweet fruit to substitute for sugary treats, yes it's still a form of sugar, but full of nutrients and not as calorific.

Don't blame it all on sugary treats, Look at your portion sizes and choice of meals, use smaller plates and bowls.

If you are away from home at mealtimes, bring a prepared lunch with you.

Don't buy sweets/biscuits/cakes. If they aren't in your house, you won't eat them.

Get a referral to a dietician. Engage a friend to walk with you. Many of us (especially women!!) are "obligers" and will keep a committment to someone else when we won't do it for ourselves.

Break the habits which you associate with indulgence, e.g. mindlessly chomping while watching tv.

Don't eat late at night

Don't beat yourself up for slipping up, just get back on track again and keep looking forward.

I lost 5st without the need for a gym membership. The enitial battle is coming to terms with its duration. To lose 5st in a healthy manner will take 7 months. Plenty of scrambled eggs, ham, chicken, water, salad. No sauces ect and i found myself walking alot more. Get out in the fresh air walk a mile every other day. The weight will fall off. Sweet treats is a frame of mind. Substitute it with a piece of fruit but be careful. It can be shocking. I found myself although with results severly depressed and didnt recognise myself in the mirror long process to fix. So take your time and adjust in the right ways and youll be fine. Good luck!!

Loosing weight is simple, companies don't tell you this, as they make money from you, but it is simple.

1. Work out your BMI ( body mass index ) use an online calculator, hers one; http://www.calculator.net/bmi-calculator.html?ctype=metric&cage=25&csex=m&cheightfeet=5&cheightinch=10&cpound=160&cheightmeter=180&ckg=60&printit=0

2. Work out your Harris benedict equation , I'll tell you how to do this in a minute, when you have done it il explain more, here is the equation;

Harris Benedict Formula

To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:

If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2

If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375

If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55

If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725

If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

So now you know the number of calories to sustain your body at the current rate, i.e. If you consume this amount of calories every day you will stay the same, if you eat less calories you will lose weight, if you eat more calories you will gain weight!

Now how simple is that???

All food items have calories on the packet, you must measure and weigh to get exact amount correct.

As others have said - slimming world. I've lost over 3.5stone so far and gone down 3 dress sizes since January. Yes I could of been stricter and lost it quicker but I'm enjoying life so I'll do it at my own pace.

Im no expert, but ive heard Slimming world is quite effective. Apparently you can eat loads and still lose weight?

Grab a fit bit (other trackers are available) it's helped me enormously by allowing to see what I'm doing and eating. Lost a stone already and I love apps for helping with day to day stuff. Quit smoking with the help of an app (and vaping so a substitute can help too).

Set yourself a goal and put it into the app.

Everyone is different I guess abd I KNOW for some it's different than for others, for me it was a combination of things. I'd been well overweight for years and knew it, but kind of laughed at it and in a way wasn't bothered by it, even when told by medical professionals etc that I needed to lose weight. I'd never stop and think when eating, would often have chocolate bars with a cup of tea, often finish off any leftovers from others when eating at home etc etc. - my clothes sizes were gradually creeping up to XL and beyond.

Then about 18 months ago I was out shopping, saw a shirt I liked and went to try it on taking both the L and XL into the changing room - well the L wouldn't even come close to doing up, and the XL looked like the buttons were ready to pop!! And that was the kicker I needed to do something about it.

Immediately changed my diet not in a major way - just cut down across the board e.g before I'd have two sandwiches, a bag of crisps, a piece of fruit and a cake for lunch - changed that to one sandwich and a piece of fruit only. Ms G helped by cutting down my evening meal portion sizes. Choccie bars were had as treats and not the norm. All that kind of thing.

18 months later and I am three and a half stone lighter, my BMI is where it should be and my clothes size is back down to L and sometimes M!! My waist size has gone from 34" verging on 36", to 30"/32". I still need to work on my body shape a little and next step is looking at joining a gym to do that.

I've not actually changed my diet that drastically, and don't particularly watch the type of food I eat, more the quantity of it.

I think the biggest key (for me anyway) was that first kick up the arse I needed to do something about and then having the willpower to stick to it.

this doesn't work if you get hungry and don't enjoy moving about.

2 things that helped me were finding an exercise i enjoy doing (this was really hard, but DDR is something i can do for 5 hours straight without getting bored or tired).

and i'd been taught to eat everything off my plate at certain times of the day whether hungry or not so i had to consciously train myself to notice when i was actually hungry and when i was full and to cook smaller meals.

Look up something called EFT = Emotional Freedom Technique.

Search Google and YouTube for EFT.

EFT is very easy to learn and great for weight loss.

One thing to remember is you didn't become overweight overnight so losing weight wil not happen overnight. You are best losing weight slowly but steadily. Losing a lot of weight too quickly can be dangerous.

Can highly recommend slimming world.. guysand girls both welcome.. no calorie counting... eat as much as you want of free foods.. meat, veg, rice pasta.. takes a bit of planning.. and you need to enjoy cooking, their recipe books are great.. but start it and watch the weight steadily drop off.. look online for your nearest group.. fiver a week.. and free for life if you maintain your goal weight .. good luck OP A x

I am losing weight with weight watchers. They don't look just at diet, but also exercise ideas and how your mood affects what you eat.

Try to cut out processed stuff and cook things from scratch. Batch cook things like spag bol using 5% fat mince. Swap to healthier options like brown rice and brown bread.

Let the weight come off slowly. If you lose one lb a week , you will lose over half a stone by Christmas. Set yourself small goals and draw a graph to show your progress.

Don't worry if you have a bad week. It's the overall trend that's important.

2. Work out your Harris benedict equation , I'll tell you how to do this in a minute, when you have done it il explain more, here is the equation;

To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:

If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2

If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375

If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55

If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725

If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

So now you know the number of calories to sustain your body at the current rate, i.e. If you consume this amount of calories every day you will stay the same, if you eat less calories you will lose weight, if you eat more calories you will gain weight!

Now how simple is that???

All food items have calories on the packet, you must measure and weigh to get exact amount correct.

start walking

start with one mile a night , takes 20 minutes.

do it 5 nights a week consecutively , enjoy the 2 nights off but also enjoy the walking .

no need topower walk , just walk fast

after a week or two find a route with hills / inclines / steps maybe .

the weight will fall off , youll sleep better and feel better

this one works but like everything throw yourself into it and keep it up

youll soon be on 4/5 miles a day with ease

Instead of asking here, where frankly we're not, in general, qualified to give advice, we should check them out first. And this isn't a pop at the OP, it's advice that applies to loads of threads here.
