Something posted on one of the bareback threads got me thinking. I've recently had a check up (was clean!!  ) but was wondering about the next one. Some people I know lie and give fake names, but others seem to be honest and give their own. If you are one of the latter what do you tell the nurses when they ask why you are back so soon? Is it OK to tell the truth and say we are swingers? Do you get a 30 min lecture if you do?
I'd prefer to be honest and say I am a swinger so they know I'll be a regular visitor but I really don't want to be told off every time I go. Advice would be appreciated. |

many people outside swinging have sex...nite clubs the lot, being promiscious doesnt make u a swinger lol-only difference is I believe is that we organise most of our meets and its not so casual or admittedly as dagerous as meeting some fud in a club when ur halfpished(or whatever)-for me most people minimize the risk through swinging rather tham meeting any tomdickharryorsally |

These people deal with all types without judgement. They want to encourage people to take their sexual health seriously!

I don't know, thats why i ask!
Justv really wanting to hear from the people who do get frequent check ups as to how they go about it. I'm fine giving my name but this will be a first for me and was wondering how it will be handled. |

I remember the last time I went. I'll remember the lecture the nurse gave me about swinging with bisexual guys until the day I die! I gave them my real name etc. too, but after that first time, decided to save the my blushes, and I'd just go along and say I had just started a new relationship and just wanted to check that everything was in order..... they must have thought I started a lot of new relationships |

Ive being going ta the GUM clinics fa years now and pretty much always see the same DR (actually the bother of an old school friend)
I have always been honest about what i do and actually have a joke with him
These people have heard it all before and more so don't be worried by it xx  |

I was very honest with the doc who saw me and told him I swing. He thanked me for being so honest with him. I was really relaxed anyway. Am sure they are used to hearing all sorts of reasons why you need to get a check up, but my question is although its good to get checked but the next person you have oral or penetrative sex with could put you at risk. So how often do you think you should be checked?  |

It was more the gum clinic in Nottingham where I used to live that I had the problem with. Maybe it was because it was about 15 years ago, and attitudes have changed. Since I moved to York 7 years ago, I go to the clinic twice a year, but use the 'just started new relationship' blurb. Maybe you won't have a problem with them at all. They have seemed fine to me since I've been using ours
I still give them my details too, so it shouldn't be too difficult for them to check what I've told them in the past. They must know, but haven't brought it up. I'd say don't worry. |

Ah OK thats more reassuring.
While I was waiting for my appointment there were two lads there who seemed to know the reception staff pretty well so I guess there are a few that just pick up people in bars a lot. I would hope that swingers, who at least use protection and arrange their meets should be OK. |

Well if she did then she should have reported any bad stuff that was said and insist that she sees another DR
I do pretty much see the same one most times but have seen the others too and they have always been understanding and helpful as well xx |

if yo tell them you swing you get lots of free condoms lol
i go every three months and have never lied about anything, does get a bit embarrassing when they only have 3 columns for recent partners and you fill that all up after going back 2 days 
they are professional people and have probably heards worse than you meet people for nsa sex |

always tell the truth. Always give my name and mobile number for contact if a problem. These people want you to stay healthy and if they have the full facts i am thinking it makes their job easier. You wouldn't take yer car to a garage and not tell them the full story? And i think swingers are more aware and take their sexual health a bit more seriously. Also they give me two little bags of assorted condoms instead of one. |

We have regular checkups and are totally honest about our names and swinging. The docs and health advisors are non-judgmental, they've heard it all before! First time we moved to this area we were asked if we'd been swinging long and how often we did it, and when they realised we're long-established regular swingers, advised us to have hepatitis B jabs and we both did. When we go for checkups they're always friendly, and always ask us to tell our friends to have them regularly too. They always give us stacks of condoms and lube.

I go every 4 months, and I only had to explain that I was a swinger the 1st time.
I give my real name and address, with my memory I would forget a fake name (though it never occured to me to do that, I wouldnt want to).
Its the same 3 doctors that work my local clinic and nurses. On my last visit there was even a student nurse.
They do ask probbing questions but its only embarrassing if you arent confident. My clinic asks how many people you have slept with in the last 3 months, but only asks details of the last 3, name, age and where they are from. And if I have slept with anyone from abroad.
Im not ashamed about going, I do the chlamydia test myself and then its just a case of getting blood taken.
I would urge everyone to go regular, we may all play safe, but nothing is 100% safe and if you get checked regular it means that if you have anything hopefully it is caught quickly. |

Due to a blood condition I have, the tests done via blood are done once a month for me... I am tested at my doctors at the moment rather than going to the clinic... (due to having some other problems.)
But usually am tested every 3 months... never been offered injections against anything though..
I actually find it amusing to see the faces on trainees...

I used to use the 'just started a new relationship' blurb, but since I go every three months, the excuse started wearing thin. So I just said 'I'm a swinger', and the doc never even raised his eyebrows. No lecture, or anything.
His form asking about recent sex partners is a lot easier, now! I just say "six in the last six months. With all of them, I had vaginal sex with a condom, oral sex without a condom, and no anal". He does my swabs and blodd tests and sends me on my way, with THREE little bags of condoms LOL |

I've got a couple of friends who have done stints as sexual health nurses and they have seen it/heard it all before so nothing shocks or bothers them so my advice is to be honest.
Another piece of advice is to always go to a GUM clinic for a check up rather than your GP. If you apply for life insurance and the company writes to your gp for your medical history, then frequent sexual health check ups on your records makes you a high risk so you may get turned down. Visits to a GUM clinic are anonymous and don't show up on your medical records.

I was going every six months but they told me that even given my erm... hobbies... that once a year was sufficient.
I didn't feel the need to give false details either. The information you give them is confidential and I don't have anything to hide. You are totally within your rights to give false details if you so choose, they don't care either way.
I made the first guy I ever saw blush cause he totally wasn't expecting me to say I was a swinger. Apparently I didn't look the 'type' whatever that means!!  He was cute too! Our clinic has a drop in every day between 8.30am and 10.00am. It's an eye opener and there are all sorts of people there, I'm not sure what type he had me down as!
Think about getting tested for Hep B while you're there.
They gave me a bucket of free condoms and a C Card which allows me to pick them up from a variety of other clinics round the city.

I should really hope that the advice of a check-up only once a year was given on the basis of how often you actually meet ???
I have seen some profiles on here with a meet verification from once or even twice a week, and given the numbers involved, I would worry !
I try to get checked in between new partners as far as practicable but at least every 10 weeks.

Agrees - was told years ago at the clinic its best to go once every 3 months, even if not active in that time, to reduce the "window" in the (unlikely) event of a "mishap",... saves narrowing down who to contact.

Yup... sorry, should have said that, it is totally based on my circumstances and I'm pretty sure everyone is different. I don't meet lots of different people and when they told me that I was seeing the same three people and did for quite a long time. If I meet new people then I go on a more regular basis. Hope that clarifies! |

We tell the truth,never had a lecture yet,however we've had a few questions asking whats its like,how did we get into swinging etc.One nurse even asked what site we used because she wanted to try it. |

Always tell the truth they are there to look after you. I have been given nothing but helpful advise at my Gum clinic. They know im a swinger and always come away with a little bag of comdoms. |

Gum cinics never lecture,they want ppl to come back.They are unjudgemental and don't care about your personal life.The nurses at mine know i am a swinger,i've even invited them to a club!(they said no tho ) |

how do other people go about getting checked,i wait 2 weeks after last time i had sex then always wait till ive got results 2 weeks later before i play again just in case always been clear tho but means out of action for 4 weeks every 6 months . |

I have used both my local GUM centre and also the family planning centre for check ups. I used to use an excuse, but got fed up with it and just say that I like to have a few partners, some regular, some not. The only time I have ever been asked for details of those partners was when i tested positive for chlamydia. Ironically it was when I was in a monogamous relationship and he was the one I caught it from!!
In my experience the GUM centre gets its results back much quicker, but is harder to get an appointment for. The family planning centre has drop in hours, but you can wait longer for results.
Any staff member who hive a lecture instead of informing an intelligent adult about risks should be reported. They are trained to be non-judgemental so as not to discourage clients who may be sex workers and drug addicts as well as you and me.
As for the condoms, I haven't paid for any in years and I get through loads every week!! If you want more than they give you, just ask. Contraception is free on the NHS and that includes condoms. |

We go every three months and get loads of condoms and lube. We also got vaccinated against Hep B (I got it done years ago due to a job where I handled loads of bloods). Suz in her new job has a long list of things including hep b to get vaccinated against.
I must admit we have had mixed receptions from the dr's but the nurses have been great.
The last Doc I saw was a lady doc of asian decent and she obviously did not approve but she was polite. didnt bother me but Suz was not pleased with her attitude.
She asked me if I had had sex this last week (the one before we went) and I said yes, then she asked with who? I said how many do you want to know about?
The nurse laughed! The doc looked shocked!
