It's short for 'laugh out loud'; an alternative to 'haha' or using an emoji. Often used to indicate that the sender is making a humorous retort.

it's used when someone says something and they don't feel confident about what they said. like they mean what they said and hope if it's taken the wrong way then others will not take them seriously.
i use lol like the above said, if i actually do laugh i use it. |

When we write a text .. maybe on fab ... to a friend .. family
There isnt a tone of voice or facial expression .... Some people get offended very easily .... so a lol at the end of your text hopefully denotes a relaxing manner .. or tone

I use lol to denote that I have either made a joke or that I understand a joke.
For example.
Knock knock,
who's there?
Shop.
Shop who?
You've just come to a knocking shop, mate! lol |
