What's the reality of this from those with experience or health professionals?
I've been diagnosed with closed angle glaucoma and am now awaiting laser surgery for both eyes.
I didn't ask as many questions as I wish I had now.
Am I inevitably going to go blind eventually? Feeling stressed. |

My customer I've been working for this week is practically blind through it. Painted a very pessimistic view for me.
I sat in my van and had a little cry after. |

That is a really shitty thing to happen, I'm so sorry.
You've had doom and gloom and messages of miracles in this thread but you know the bottom line is that until you talk to your healthcare team, you are not going to know.
There are different types and different causes but it seems the earlier it's caught and treated, the better the outcome. Now you are in 'the system' you will be taken care of.
Have you been tested for diabetes lately? |

You will not go blind now that the problem has been diagnosed.
Since you can see well enough to drive, your glaucoma has been diagnosed at a very early stage, and the prognosis is excellent. Glaucoma is the most common eye disease after cataracts, so treatment regimes are very well established, and outcomes are virtually always successful.
There are several different types of glaucoma, and different stages of each one. So other people’s experiences, good or bad, are unlikely to be the same as yours.
Your specialist will confirm all of this before your ops.
There is absolutely no reason to be concerned about going blind. The very very worst that could happen is impaired vision in one eye, and it would have zero effect on the quality of your life. The ops. are standard bog-routine for the surgeons.
I won’t say “Don’t worry” because that’s impossible. But what you have to worry about isn’t really very serious.

I was borderline diabetic a couple of years ago. Well it may have been longer.
I keep fit and eat well. I don't eat meat. Ok ok. I eat live meat, before anyone says.  |

Write down the questions you wish you'd asked and then the others that have occurred to you since and go back and ask them. Only the health professional who has diagnosed you will know your full history and treatment options.

Probably a good idea to get tested again then. Your vegetarian diet will be high in carbs and carbs are converted to sugar. High sugars are a contributory factors to glaucoma.

All the best. Try not to get too catastrophic in your thinking. I know that's easier said than done but if you're working from an incomplete set of information, you will start filling in the gaps yourself or find information to do that and in a state of distress or anxiety they won't aways be rational. |

My mum had it and so does one of my sisters. It can be controlled with the right treatment. Luckily I'm showing no signs of it yet. I go for an eye test every 12 months. Try not to worry. |

I have a family history of it - my grandfather went blind and my mum does drops.
As an FYI - NHS pays for twice a year eye exams for those over forty who have a family history of glaucoma. Best chance of good outcome is early detection. Get to the doctor, people! |

I have an 86 year old customer who has the same. She had laser treatment last week and could see perfectly the next day.
She is booked in to have the second done in a month.
She said she has never had such good sight! |

Ouch hun, progressive illnesses ARE scary, we are well alowed to have a litle cry about it, hugs!
My granmother lived with Glaucoma from 50 to mid 70's, never had any eye surgery, and she was meticulously strict with her different eye drops and died with a normal vision, for her age. She drove in her early 70s!
There's plenty of hope, but of course the diagnosis in itself is a bit scary. |

Let's stop this one right here: there is NO correlation between a vegetarian diet and developing glaucoma.

Steady on! She has already told us she was diagnosed with pre-diabetes a few years ago and I was suggesting she gets checked again because uncontrolled blood sugars are a contributory factor.
A vegetarian diet is big in seed and vegetable oils and carbs, neither of which contribute to health or good blood sugar control. |

Now that it's been diagnosed, follow the treatment program, to keep the pressure under control. I have it too, but mine was gradual, not closed angle . I was diagnosed 10 years ago. I had the laser treatments, and use drops daily to keep my pressure under control. I went from an interocular pressure of 44mm/hg when diagnosed down to around 16.
It is irreversible damage, but the good news is that now that you know it's there, you can get it under control.

If glaucoma is found early it can be virtually erradicated, it's generally older people who don't get it seen to and once it takes hold it just gets worse, you noticed much difference in your sight? |

I had an emergency appointment a year ago! Not impressed with the system so far. |

Just opened my next appointment letter for this.
A year on and I have a hole in each eye from laser which has dropped the pressure.
I've been spared the eye drops for now but the pains are coming back a little now so I'm hoping when I have the pressure tests and eye poking this time things will still be well within limits.
