The health risks of shaving?
Jump to: Newest in thread
From a profile who looked at us recently, and a new one to us at least.
"Also please pass on by if you are shaven, we find it a turn off, not to mention the nasty side effects the health risks."
Hmmmmm.... really?

You have hair there for a reason. The body rarely puts energy into growing things it doesn't need (except those pesky appendix's lol)
Here is an article from the telegraph about shaving down there
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-health/11087771/Pubic-hair-8-things-you-need-to-know-before-you-shave.html
Ultimately it's your choice to shave and their choice not to like it. |

Think someone is on about ingrowing hairs which can happen but not very often, must have overheard a horror story about it somewhere,if you are hygienic and use new razors, its not a problem.just don't put aftershave there haha it stings like crazy. |

"Also, not sure it's nice to dissect someone's profile on an open forum. The question could have been posed without quoting directly from it. "
Very true, we were suspended for 48hrs just for quoting just like the OP, but then it was from a pm and not a profile status so the rules might be different |

Viruses like molluscum contagiosum and the human papillomavirus (genital warts) are easily spread by removing your pubic hair it also increases risks of infection and sexually transmitted diseases.
There is also an increase in group A streptococcus, staphylococcus aureus and its recently mutated cousin methicillin resistant staph aureus (MRSA) caused by the warm moist environment of the genitals, these are not viewed as STIs

None of the salons in my town will do 'all-off' waxing they say its because it can cause health issues and one salon owner said they need extra insurance to cover them doing it?! I personally think my foof would be in more danger from me with a razor haha... having said that I gave gone back to trimmed only as my skin is too sensitive for anything else |

we have evolved from being ape like neanderthals so hair is one of the things we no longer need .nobody thinks twice of shaving their armpits.
or men shaving their faces. not to mention shaving legs. so why is it so bad to shave pubes .?? |

You need to be pretty damn ill already to have to worry about mrsa.
As it can only really do you any harm if you're already on antibiotics.
Its resitance came at the cost of being shit at competing with other bacteria |

That may be more down to direct injury of poorly applied wax onto the soft mucus membrains of the genitals.
Rather than after effects |

But we only shave them for aesthetic effect. There is no other reason that we shave. As I said before, the body is a very effective machine and it would not waste valuable energy growing hair in places we don't need it. Evolution is a wonderful thing.
Shaving is purely down to personal choice and if you believe the benefits are greater than the alleged risks then that's good for you. I personally don't shave but that's mainly because I'm lazy and not a contortionist |

Anything that creates the risk of broken skin exposes the body to more infection. No one seems to be worried about researching the risks of scratches from fingernails |

I can add to that. I've shaved for over 30 years, simply because I prefer it. No adverse effects ever. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having a problem like this either. Of course I don't know everyone though! I don't know why people get so incensed about these things tbh? You do what you want to do and I'll sort myself out, is generally what I think. |

"Mr A is stood on the fence with this one...he has alopecia so doesn't shave, there's nothing to trim!?!
Is he the next evolutionary leap? "
Nah, but he should worry about the splinters from sitting on the fence. Ouch. |

i do love how incensed people get on these threads lol just because it hasnt happened to you or Brenda next door doesnt mean in doesnt happen!
all risks or hazards a maybe's, not concrete. smoking MAY cause cancer, not every smoker gets cancer. |

I think this is scaremongering again through the media. Look at the sources at these reports, how big the control groups are during experiments/tests, etc. Remember the horror stories of the baby mattresses causing cotdeath and the IMMR causing autism (and I have an autistic child, who doesn't give credence to it!!).
Yes, there may be a slight risk of easily catching something through broken skin and cuts after shaving or waxing, but the body is a great machine for healing itself; shave the day before a meet to give the body a chance to heal any microscopic nicks, etc. We're probably more at risk catching a cold, rather than anything else through shaving. |

You cannot get mrsa from having sex ....the only way you can get if you have a open wound or you are a carrier ,most people carry mrsa but with out being swobbed you wouldn't no ,people with open wounds like leg ulcers or have had surgery ,or people with low immune systems are more likely to get ,and people with urine catheters ,I'm a ex nurse and looked after people with mrsa and I've never cought it also other nasty infections .... |

No one said you could the reason why shaving and waxing can allow a MRSA infection is due to the shaving or waxing causing those very open wounds you mention.
If you were a nurse you would understand that as it is also why women are no longer shaved for childbirth and why shaving has fallen out of favour pre-operations.
The question was asked “What are the health risks?” we gave some of the health risks, but just like bareback sex because a risk is present it does not mean the any particular person will become infected.
Put it another way a fertile woman could fall pregnant the first time she has intercourse with a fertile man or she could have intercourse everyday for years and not become pregnant.

I shave for several reasons.
I prefer to be hair free and smooth
It looks nicer imo
It feels nice imo
Hubby prefers the look and the feel ... he also shaves.
I don't want hubby getting a stray pube when giving me oral the same as i don't want a stray pube of his in my mouth.
Neither of us have problems even though we shave.
I have had several operations recently and afterwards i have required the help of nurses and they have all said there is no problem with me being shaved.
Mainly i shave cus i don't want to be a hairy mary !!!

We do not claim that shaving will give you a STI but we do point out that you are increasing the risks, much the same as we do not claim that oral sex without protection will result in a STI but it does increase the risks.
As with all sex people need to make informed decisions on what is right for them, rather than simply following fashion.
Those who claim there is no health risk involved in shaving may find the following informative.
It is a report from the Hospital Infection Society Working Party on Infection Control in Operating Theatres.
In other words people who should know what they are talking about.

Everybody has preferences on their profile.. age, race, size, male, female, pierced/unpierced, shaved/unshaved. It's all about personal choice.
I wouldn't be bothered if someone said this to me. I am shaved and I would rather know in advance that someone didn't want to play with a shaven female, than turn up for a meet and then get the knock back for having a smooth fandango!
They are being upfront about their preferences, just move on to someone else. Their reasons are irrelevant really as any risks are the responsibility of the individual. We're all adults afterall.
