Hi all. Nothing to do with swinging per see but last few mk the I have been having a lot of anxiety attacks out of the blue. Sweating trembling a stomach cramps. It feels awful and has been a drain on my confidence. I have had this before but not so many attacks in such a short space of time. I would be delighted if others out there suffer this and any tips to ease this

I suffer from panic attacks and extreme social anxiety.

Breathing.... I have a routine I do to calm myself down.

Caffeine affects it big time..... limit that during times like this.

Recognize triggers and try to deal with them before it happens.

Hugs.

I have a prescription for my panics but I never take it. Having it though in case makes me feel better.

Have people you can call when panicking. I panic when im in large crowds if it happens I call my friend and sit down and they help me calm.

Talk about it with people..

and .. I hope this soon passes for you.

If you have been drinking or smoking more to ease the stress try cutting down. Doesnt mean you have to stop.

I suffer from depression, which sometimes can cause these sort of attacks, although not as bad as you describe.

I would have a chat with your GP if these continue. Also try and think what could have caused this to occur, past experiences etc.

Mindfulness is the key to this, recognising the signs and do the breathing exercises etc suggested above.

take care dude.

Go to your GP!

Breathing really does help.

When I'm having one I try to remember that I've had one before and survived, so I can work through this one too.

Rescue remedy works for me too.

Get some meditation apps on your phone etc .

They teach you how to control your breathing along with relaxation techniques .

Good luck

Yoga breathing helps, close eyes and think of your favourite place, breath in for a count of 4 hold breath for count of 2 and breathout for count of 4, hold for a count of 2.....repeat till anxiety goes.

Thanks for all your kind advice. I feel a little calmer today. Only drank a moderate amount last night. Just a shame my acupuncturist is away for 3 weeks. If I can find a massage therapist open today I will book one. (Not the happy ending ones!). Stomach spasm is not quite as severe today either. Time to run a hot bath x

I read books on this from library and they helped cure it.

I had an anxiety attack a couple of weeks ago. First one in about three years. It was in the middle of the night, couldn't sleep, then worried I would be knackered for when the kids got up.

So I went for a fast pace walk for an hour until I had burnt all my energy reserves and just could stand and wobble then went back to bed and fell straight to sleep. Two-three hours of quality sleep was better than hours of interrupted.

I get fairly regular attacks where I get generally irritable and negative with shallow breathing. Every so often I'll get bigger ones where my head spins, I panic and I get the 'fight or flight' response. Usually in crowds or social situations. I had to be helped out of a shopping center once as I couldn't walk.

I find either spending some time alone scrolling through Facebook on my phone or even reading through the fab forums really helps wind them down and distance myself.

Alternatively, sit down and focus on a spot on the wall and start counting slowly whilst breathing calmly and regularly. Herbal pills such as Kalms also help.

Being with someone who knows about them and how to support you really helps. The number of times we've been out somewhere and I've told steph 'we have to go' is crazy. We just tap out.

I get them when very over tired and stressed... as in living on four hours sleep for long periods. I haven't seen a doctor since I know the cause and know that more sleep usually resolves the issue. With that said, I hate them.

Ahh OP, anxiety is a horrible feeling. Try to remember, even when it is bad, that it is just adrenaline that is causing your symptoms.

When I had them, so bad I couldn't leave the house, I learned a relaxation technique which involved tensing and relaxing all the muscles in my body. It really worked. There are some that are free to download. To balance yourself on the moment, try using this;

5 things you can see right now, name them

4 things you can hear right now, name them

3 things you can touch, and reach out and touch them, right now

2 things you can smell or like the smell of, name them

1 slow, deep breath in, slow breath out. Then focus on your breathing, keep doing this before shifting your focus of attention onto something different....it will pass

Hope that helps a bit

A xx

I'd just like to back up what Amanda said. I really struggle with anxiety and someone suggested the above exercise (well, a variation on it) to me the other day.

I've been doing it and it is one of the better ones I've come across. Something about really observing what your senses are experiencing seems to work.

The other thing I'd say about anxiety is that I like the idea that acceptance is better than fighting it. If you fight the panic, you add fear on fear.

Just accept it - "I'm panicking. I accept I am. This will pass".

Take care and hang in there.

Can you identify a possible cause that would have brought on your symptoms now, OP?

While I know I've suffered from social anxiety for most of my adult life, it was only towards the end of last year that I experienced 'real', physical symptoms arising from the delayed reaction to a close family illness. It was scary enough to make me see a doctor and, to cut a long story short, feel completely better physically when confirmed to be healthy.

I wish you well

I suffer from anxiety too, and is made worse by not getting much sleep due to my job and family problems- my nerves feel really bad and I feel panicky and short of breath. Having time on my own, just being still and having peace and quiet trying to take deep breaths helps me. I shallow breathe a lot, so need to focus on breathing more often.

Really hope you feel better, and it calms down soon and probably best to see a doctor if it keeps happening.

"...my nerves feel really bad and I feel panicky and short of breath... probably best to see a doctor if it keeps happening."

Those were my symptoms too, alongside a racing heartbeat that was the most uncomfortable part. It was amazing to see how it all disappeared with talking to my doctor and being reassured about my health.

For anyone, it's no worth putting up with it for the sake of a doctor's visit saved.

Avoid caffeine and nicotine if possible...

Look for signs and try and identify them so u know what triggers your attacks; so u know next time. Try and avoid it then.

Breathing and relaxation techniques are the best way forward. Breathe with your stomach.

I think alot of anxiety is caused by lack of sleep. I can go to bed knackered then suddenly wake up thinking about all sorts then can't sleep toss and turn then next day I'm in a right snappy mood. Any cures for better sleep I guess?

Yes, they aren't nice symptoms, I do get palpitations and flutters sometimes.

Glad its got better for you

I try to minimize my triggers, and recognise when I'm getting anxious and take time out to recover

Thanks angel - you're very right about being able to recognise and avoid it before it takes hold. For me it's often in the form of not being able to focus on one thing, feeling restless - even making myself watch a movie or something requiring a minimum of attention can really help. Or, as others have said, sleep.

Take up some yoga training. It will lower your general anxiety levels and also give you well practiced steps to follow to relax very effectively when you might want to. The more skilled you get, the faster, easier and more deeply you can become relaxed on demand. It may take some breaths or even just thinking about it, and you'll find your physiology and state of mind altering responsively.

I occasionally have minor anxiety, luckily a big attack is rare.

I have a couple of mental happy places that I use to try and calm myself, focus on my breathing.

I also have started using an adult colouring book (a friend gave me a Harry Potter one for Xmas), it gives me a distraction.

I already drink decaf tea anyway, but if imagine cutting down on caffeine will help.

Some light exercise might be useful, I've occasionally felt the need to go to the gym when I'm a bit antsy.
