What is a good web cam?

We want to have a bit of fun camming or Skyping, but the camera which is in the lid of our lap-top is never at the right angle. If it's right for the 'performance' then we can't see who is watching, and, more importantly what they are doing!

We assume we need a separate web-cam, but what should we get?

They are much of a muchness. £20 odd should get you one. Input "web cam" into Amazon and look for 5 *, there is one with that rating.

If you have an iphone, ipod touch or ipad (probably Android devices too) you can download an App called EpocCam from the App store and it turns your device into a wireless webcam. You just download the software from their website and set the camera settings on the chatrooms/skype to the Kinoni Camera and Bobs your Uncle you have a wifi enabled webcam that you can set up anywhere. It is better to plug it in to a power outlet though as it eats through the battery pretty sharpish.

For those who don't have Skype or don't want their skype name out there try a website called appear.in. It is based on html5 so the picture quality is far superior and you can invite people into your own personal secure room. I think 8 at a time can be camming together.

If you wish to use a separate webcam from the one installed on your laptop, you will have to disable the built in webcam.you can't just plug n play.

There are loads of tutorials to easily do this on YouTube.

We came into swinging via exhibitionist camming, so a bit of experience with setting up for good shows!

Obviously a reasonable web cam makes a lot of difference, but any 'HD' cam will do a decent job, as much as anything you'll be limited by your internet 'upstream' bandwidth, so you may have to choose to broadcast at a lower quality so that your framerate is reasonable for viewers - otherwise it's all jumpy and jerky.

Any photographers will know that light matters, so make sure the room is well lit. Lots of indirect light is best - uplighters and that kind of thing.

The last thing is about where you put the camera - webcams usually come with a reasonable length of cord, but get a USB extension cable so you can move it about more freely.

We've used a tripod when recording with a video camera, but funnily enough we found the best thing for a webcam is a microphone stand with adjustable boom, a few elastic bands to attach the webcam to the place where you'd normally put the microphone and then it's REALLY easy to adjust it to be wherever you want, at any height, angle, or even for close ups A couple of twist ties to hold the cable in place along the stand so it's not dangling or getting caught.

Then with everything set up you can just get on with making a good show without having to faff with setup partway through

So much fun
